Description

The Apex of waterproof breathable ankle protection.

The Black Diamond Apex GTX Gaiter is like the huge, pissed-off bouncer at the door of your favorite bar. Water and snow try their hardest to get in your boots and up your pant cuffs, but this full-height, welded Gore-Tex gaiter beats them back like the can’t-hack-it chumps that they are. The nylon-coated strap and lace hook keep the Apex securely in place, and nickel-plated adjustment buckles ensure long-lasting durability.

So has anyone used these vs the OR crocodiles?
I'll be using them for ice climbing and glacier travel mostly.
Thanks!

One of my buddies had these and I have the croc's and his looks shredded and mine don't. The croc's are just so burly!

Review 2.0

So initially I was quite dissapointed in these since the closing mechanism is a little weak, but after a few trips, I love them. They fit my boots a lot better than OR expiditions and are much lighter.

A little dissapointed

Just looking at them out of the box, I'm not impressed. The main reinforced area is super tough but doesnt cover very much. I think it would be much better if the reinforced piece covered the entire inner leg section. Also. the strap and buckle mechanism is no where near as smooth as the OR crocodiles. I was really hoping to get rid of the OR's, but it looks like I'll be keeping them and returning these.

I will field test them this weekend and see how they do.

A little worried

I got these for winter hiking and I really think they work great. They keep me dry though I do end up with a lot of frost on the inside of them.

The sizing is a little odd though. I ordered a large (size 11 non plastic boots)and the bottom didn't fit around my boots but the calf fit nicely. I got an XL and they fit nicely around my boots but I've got the tops pulled as tight as they go. It works though.

The reason I'm worried is the reinforced section is only glued on and its already starting to peel away from the rest of the gaiter. I've used them maybe 6 times so far. Durability may be an issue.

I had the same problem with them on my plastic boots, the bottoms are tight but the tops are to loose! lol The cinch does not tighten enough on them .

I couldn't find a full view of these anywhere on the web. So here's a hopefully helpful picture. The lighter part in the instep and the logo sits right in the middle of my calf

Review Title

I have used these to climb Mt Timpanogos and am pleased with them. The construction, materials, are top notch. I think you might want to size up a bit I ordered the Medium and had to trade them for the large. I am a fan of BD equipment.

What is the durability of the inner leg...

What is the durability of the inner leg section. Is is the same or weaker than 1000 D cordura? How much weaker/stronger?

Responded on

Should be a welded double layer 600d abrasion guard. You can see the seam about halfway down where the fabric changes. That is where you start to get the burlier fabric.

Will these fit over a full AT ski boot...

Will these fit over a full AT ski boot like the Scarpa F1, F3, or Spirit 4?

Responded on

Yes. It will adjust to a variety of boot sizes.

Responded on

I would say no. I can hardly manage to fit them over my ice climbing boots. I have the large and wear size 10.5 Millet Radikal boots. Unless you have a small foot and get the XL gaiters and can live with a very loose calf, I say look somewhere else.

The BLACK IS BACK !!!

I wanted to get a very tuff water proof alpine gator after last year cutting my old shit Ems pair with my crampons on Mount Washington . I tried the Or expedition gator that is around the same price and has a shit load of great feedback, But truth be told they suck ! if anyone says they are easy to get on your a meathead who just likes giving false reviews! They are stiff and fit like crap!!! and come it 2 sizes to big! and are very loose and impossible to get a seal around the boot! These black diamonds kick ass! they fit perfect! miles ahead of OR shit boxes! trust me im very picky maybe to picky on how these fit, and that is over LA Sportiva Evo mountaineering boots! These are better made all they way material ease of use etc etc , they also look nicer! give these a shot they are the best in the class! I will use these this winter on a night climb on mw.
