  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I am surprised to be submitting a disappointed review for a BD product. I really like my Contact crampons and they have served me well. But last year I had a sunny Cascade snow climb where snow balled under my feet all the time. Talking to people and reading stuff online led me to believe that an anti-balling system would help that. So I bought these for the Contact crampons, only to discover that this is a replacement plastic base for what my crampons already have. 100% same thing. In my mind, it's not a special add-on anti-balling product, but a replacement part for the same thing the crampons came with when I bought them in Sept 2012.
And it's not great for anti-balling either, which is why I was trying to upgrade. I've only had that problem with warm/moist Cascade snow, so they might work in other areas just fine. And they're great for glacier walking. And really, whacking your feet with every step isn't the worst thing in the world, but still.... I wish the marketing materials had explicitly pointed out that these are replacement parts for what the crampons come with already.
Just the text from above causes problems. "The Black Diamond Contact Anti-Balling System (ABS) bolts to your crampons to reduce snow accumulation whether you?re traveling across glaciers or aerating a polar bear?s front lawn." NO, it does not bolt anywhere and it doesn't further reduce the snow-balling any more than your crampons already do off the rack from the store because they have this piece already.
"The easy-on"...yes, true... "injection-molded design offers a lightweight alternative to lugging around massive snowballs on your feet." Again, an *alternative* to the exact same thing on my feet? It's not an *alternative," it's an exact replacement. "Compatible with Spring 2010 and newer versions of the Contact and Neve crampons." Well, that's clear and true, at least.
The product is fine for what it is; the way it's being sold is not.
