I wear them. All. Year.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Height: 5' 5"
    Weight: 110 lbs
    Size Purchased: 38.0

SIZE REFERENCE: I have a pretty narrow foot, heavily pronate, and take a 7 in most shoes: I'm a 37.5 and 38 in La Sportiva climbing shoes, a 7-7.5 in Sanuk, a 7.5 in Salomon, and a 245/38 in this model of the Birkenstocks. Before ordering them, I suggest stepping into a shop and finding someone who really, really knows the brand to help determine your size; it took me about 30 minutes to find the perfect size, trying on different widths and styles. The best time to try shoes on is after you have walked around a bit, which allows your feet to swell a little and show their true extent after activity.

PROS: I love these sandals. I wear them everywhere and often just wear them around the house for comfort. They're super comfortable, especially with socks--Birkenstocks and socks is such a classic, quirky combo. In the winter, I will even wear a thick pair of hiking socks with my Birks if I don't feel like lacing up my boots. Generally, everybody knows that Birkenstocks are the classic comfort sandal (or clog), and this makes them absolutely excellent for walking around a lot (e.g., touring museums and whatnot) while vacationing. I take them everywhere I go while on trips.

CONS: One thing I've noticed is that the suede on these stretches out pretty quickly--for that, I'd knock it down to a 4.5-star rating if I could. I have had them for a little over a year now (about 15 months) and I could go for a couple more notches to buckle them more tightly. I've worn them probably 25% of the past year (very often), and they're really loose now (despite moving the buckle over a couple notches while wearing socks with them). If you have really narrow feet and the tightest setting is still too big, don't be discouraged since you can easily get the suede punched (or carefully do it yourself with the right tools). The cork midsole is also deteriorating in the front and back of the sandal at a faster rate than the bottom EVA sole. I will probably invest in them getting repaired because of their relatively high price, the fact that they're leather, and the fact that they still have held up quite well, considering the heavy use! Finally, I would frankly be inclined to buy more pairs of their sandals if the details of their production were more easily available and proved to be clearly environmentally ethical and also came from cows who were treated well prior to their slaughter in the industry they were originally raised for (but that's a personal thing, so no stars marked off there for the sandal itself).

BOTTOM LINE: Fantastic sandal, but might need to be repaired with heavy use. Super comfy, but getting them sized is really necessary! Otherwise, order a couple pairs and ship back the ones that don't make your feet happy. When you've found the right ones, you'll know :)

Terrific sandal, unbeatable price.

I've been wearing Birkenstocks almost exclusively for 30 years. I love the new soft footbed. I bought these in Russet Orange and Magenta Purple. I'm absolutely delighted!
