    Camp comfortably, without the weight.

Enjoy chilly nights inside a tent with the comfortable Big Agnes Zirkel SL Sleeping Bag. Big Agnes stuffed this bag with a lofty 850-fill DownTek water-repellent down insulation that brings the warmth without the weight, and the windproof Pertex shell prevents the down from puncturing through. An integrated half pad sleeve design allows you to slide your sleeping pad through a sleeve at the bottom of the bag for insulation. The hood, collar, and zipper help block any drafts, and the taffeta lining feels soft and plush. Big Agnes also included a pillow pocket that you can stuff a pillow or down jacket in, loops to attach additional liners to, and sacks for both camping and storage.

    Major design flaws

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I was looking forward to taking this bag on a backpacking trip, but ended up having two restless nights of sleep. Im really not sure why BA did this, but the hood of the bag sticks out above the top of the pad. So, my head hung off the pad in a very uncomfortable way. If I added a small camp pillow, it took up so much space in the small hood that I couldn't cinch it around my head. If I scooted down in the bag and flipped the pillow pocket down, the hood opening was up on top of my head! Needless to say, I returned it and purchased a Marmot bag, which is so nice.

From the pictures, it looks like the top of the hood hangs off the pad, but the pillow pocket might still be situated over the pad possibly?
Is there anyone that has used this that can confirm if the pillow pocket sits over the pad or not?
I don't want to buy a sleeping bag that has a pillow hanging off the pad and causing my head to tilt back off the edge. But it looks like it could otherwise be a great bag at a great price?
    Thanks!

The hood of the sleeping bag does indeed hang off the top of the sleeping pad, which is a terrible design flaw. I tried this bag for two nights and it was incredibly awkward. Either my head was hanging off the top, or if I scooted down in the bag, the hood opening was up on top of my head. The hood is so small that adding a small camp pillow means I couldn't cinch the hood around my head.

What pad sizes work with this sleeping bag?

Pad sizes that work with each sleeping bag size:

Regular (Sleeping Bag): 20" wide (51cm)

Long (Sleeping Bag): 20" wide (51cm)

    Hey,

So Big Agnes in the past made a sleeping bag then stopped at the edge of the sleeping pads. They switched things up and made it so their bags drape over the edge and overlap with the pads.

There are a few benefits with that new overlap. A big one is that there is greater retention of heat inside the system. The second one has to do with providing more room inside the bag to toss and turn. As people most of us don't lay perfectly still the entire night.

The 20" pad is the standard for their bags that have a focus on weight and performance. Some of the 25" bags are geared towards folks that are generally much taller (requiring a long bag) or folks that want more space but don't need to worry as much about weight.
