Bring along the Big Agnes Gunn Creek Sleeping Bag for your raft trip down the Green River. This Big Agnes 30-degree bag keeps you cozy during brisk desert nights, and it has synthetic insulation and a water-repellent nylon shell. In case you get drizzled on while sleeping outside on the sandy riverbank, the synthetic insulation still keeps you warm when it's wet, unlike down. Enjoy the extra room around the shoulders and feet that Big Agnes provides in all its sleeping bags. A sleeve on the Gunn Creek's back holds your rectangular sleeping pad so you don't roll off of it in the middle of the night.
Bottom Line: Sleep in the Big Agnes Gunn Creek and send the numbered sheep packing.
This bag looks cool and is comfortable if you have wide shoulders.
But, if you want to use this without a sleeping pad, you'll be out of luck. the back (bottom) of the bag has a nice sleeve you can put a sleeping pad in, but no insulation. if you choose to go without a pad, there will be nothing between your back and the ground other than two thin pieces of nylon. Color me unpleasantly surprised.
also, the idea the it compresses to 9x8 inches is questionable.
And why does backcountry always reduce the price of things right after i buy them?
overall, its not a bad bag that i am leaning toward keeping. i am taking sleeping pad recommendations though.
If you get an insulated pad to use with your bag, you'll be sittin' pretty. The bags aren't designed to be used without a pad. I'd recommend trying it with a pad before calling it a lost cause.
My girlfriend and I want to get two of these that can be zipped together. I would get a long and she would fit in a regular, are the zippers the same length and compatible or do the bags need to be the same size?
The zippers are the same. I do the same thing with my girlfriend, I need a long and she uses a regular. Just make sure that you get a right zip and a left zip.

Great bag - alone or zipped up with another just like it. The Big Ag 3 season bad is a great compliment to the bag (you need a pad b/c there is no insulation on the bottom of the bag), so you might as well get the pad that rolls up with the bag in a single stuff sack that's right!! No pad rolled up on the outside of your pack!!
I have slept in this bag in temps ranging from +25 to 60 degrees F - and slept on this bag in temps higher. Colder weather, I wore fleece to bed to supplement. No complaints!!
Where can I get an expander? Will it still zip up with another bag with the expander in place? Hubby is built like a professional linebacker. Want to make sure this will be comfortable for him. Thanks!
hello there Big Agnes Rep here. Yes you may buy a wedgie for this bag and yes they will Zip together still you may have a buldge at the top where the extra material is it would be best to have them in both bags but not needed. Looks like these guys are out of stock but if you need right away you may order from the Big Agnes website.
We took the bag on a motorcycle trip and the bag was small enough to strap on the seat. Regular mummy bags are too confining for me. This was a good compromise in order to keep the bag small enough to carry on the motorcycle. I felt there was plenty of room. It was a comfortable bag.
If you are going to be desert camping where nights are going to be in the 50's or so it may be too warm, however i find that i can usually just zip the bag open and use it more as a blanket and works great. If you are going to be doing high elevation camping then it will probably work great for you.
I personally prefer down to synthetic bags... you pay a little more, but they are generally a bit lighter and you can stuff them to a smaller size. I also like the feel of them better. If I had to make a recommendation outside the line of Big Agnes sleeping bags, I love my Mont-Bell sleeping bag to death, and recommend Mont-Bell products:
The first bag is pricey, but is worth every penny. The weight of this bag is next to nothing, and it stuffs down to a very small size. Great for backpacking. I have this bag in the 35 degree and love it to death. The second bag is a synthetic 32 degree bag. Both of these bags feature the stretch feature, which is nice for those slide sleepers who would like a little more room in their bag.
Hope this helps - let me know if you got any other questions!
I live about 45 minutes from Daniel Boone National Forest in eastern KY (aka Red River Gorge/Natural Bridge State Park). The weather is pretty similar to the smokies. I'm mostly interested in a bag, preferably Big Agnes, that I can use for spring/summer/fall camping/backpacking. I don't intend to do much if it gets below 30 degrees. Do you have any other recommendations?
It honestly depends on where you are planning on using it. Hiking in the Smoky Mtns, it may be a little too warm, but hiking on the Colorado Trail? Maybe a little too cold.
If you happen to be hiking where you think the low temperatures won't get below 30 degrees, it would be fine, but it could be too hot. Where are you planning on going?
Very comfortable and plenty of room - especially if connecting a right/left zip into one double-wide bag. Pad sleeve and pillow pocket keep you from rolling off the pad at night or letting the pillow slip away. Great bag!
I'll tweak both answers and add that what matters most isn't the length of the zippers, but that they're the same type of zipper. As long as they're the same type (YKK #8 for example) and mesh properly it actually doesn't matter if one is longer than the other. As an example I have the Cat's Meow Long (TNF) and my wife obviously has the women's version and though its zipper is shorter it just means the zipping ends where her zipper ends--my zipper could keep going further up but doesn't. It's not a problem, just a limitation.
As long as the zippers are the same length and are right and left zippers, and same type zipper. This Gun Creek bag will work with most of Big Agnes' other bags.
Yes and no. Yes, BA bags will zip together, regardless of shape or model, if they have the same size zipper and one bag has a left zipper and the other bag has a right zipper. No, this bag (70" zipper) will not zip together with the Horse Thief (60" zipper) since the zippers are not the same size.
You can go to http://www.bigagnes.com and look at the specs for the sleeping bag(s) you are considering. The description of each bag has the zipper size listed.
I love this bag, very lightweight and very warm, used along with the Big Agnes Air Core Sleeping Pad, makes a great lightweight, convenient system. I am a big guy, and needed a little more space in the bag, so I purchased the bag expander directly from Big Agnes, it added 7 inches of girth and is much more confortable now without adding much weight. Probably plenty comfy for someone with an average body frame or even slightly above average frame without the expander.
All you need is to buy two bags of from the same brand but one bag needs to be a left zip and one bag needs to be right zip. Long or regular won't matter when zipping together. As long as both zippers are compatible, they will zip together.
We took the family camping this weekend. 3 of the kids (teen girls) used this bag. Two of them (a low body fat gymnast and similarly slim basketball player) thought it wasn't warm enough (it was close to that 30-degree mark for the overnight low) but they were toasty once they zipped their bags together. The third (my competitive swimmer who packs a little more padding on her body) thought it was great.
I like the pockets for the sleeping pad and the pillow. The Big Agnes Air Core pillow fits perfectly into the pocket and the Clearview Air Pad works well with this bag.
Great bag - alone or zipped up with another just like it. The Big Ag 3 season bad is a great compliment to the bag (you need a pad b/c there is no insulation more...
