Description

When ultralight doesn't cut it, it's time to go platinum.

Diamonds are played out; all the real ballers know that platinum is where it's at, and Big Agnes is one of the premier ballers in the tent game, which is why it introduced the Fly Creek Platinum 2-Person 3-Season Tent, which is even lighter than the standard ultralight Fly Creek offerings, thanks to a full mesh body and a single Featherlight DAC hub-style pole design. If the Fly Creek's trail weight of 1lb 9oz seems a little much for you (after all, it DOES weigh nearly as much as a pair of lightweight hiking shoes), go ahead and leave the mesh body behind, bringing only the pole, the silicone- and PU-coated fly, and the footprint (sold separately), for a shelter that weighs 6oz less and is still fully-waterproof.

Don't worry, just because you're ditching unnecessary weight doesn't mean the Fly Creek is some kind of minimalist bivvy sack. It's got a full-zip door and vestibule for your pack and boots, and a storm flap and taped seams that keep night-ruining moisture at bay. Three mesh pockets hold glasses, flashlights, and a book, while reflective guylines and webbing save you the pain and indignity of late-night trip-fests. Since weight's the name of the game, even the pole hub, clips, and stakes are designed to be superlight. Now you know why the real players always go for platinum.

  • Ultralight design with all-mesh body
  • DAC Featherlite hub pole system
  • One door and vestibule
  • Fully-taped seams and storm flap
  • Three mesh pockets
  • Reflective guylines and webbing
  • Gear loft and footprint sold separately

Here's what others have to say...

Anyone actually use this tent? How does it hold up in the wind? What is the water resistance like? Does it feel flimsy? Can you set it up fly first? I'm comparing it with the Mountain Hardwear SuperMegaUL tent, which got really great reviews especially in the durability category, but knocked for being a little small. Thoughts BC.com experts?

The platinum makes some small sacrifices in durability compared to the the standard fly creek UL. Worth the premium $$ in my opinion, no....That being said these platinums are great tents. Big Agnes is tried and true and slays the MH in weight and BA has an amazing warranty. I've seen these tents go 2000 miles over 5 months on the Appalachain Trail and be just fine--no footprint needed. As far as wind goes, the MH is a clone of the BA with slightly heavier fabrics. If you don't pitch it sideways into a storm it will be fine, they are solid tents for the weight. Wind performance between the two will be similar, they are ultralight tents and will preform well, but not like a tents with sturdier poles and designs. Go for the Big Agnes, you won't regret it. The Big Agnes has a better warranty, more elegant design and will pack much much smaller. Contact me with any further concerns at amanfred@backcountry.com. I've got thousands of miles on the trail and am here to help. Thanks!

What is the difference between Packaged Weight, Trail Weight and Fast Pitch Weight (Fast Fly Weight as Big Agnes calls it).

Also what does the footprint weigh?

Best Answer Responded on

Here is how Big Agnes defines the different weights for their tents:

Packed weight:
This is the heaviest you can expect your tent to weigh, straight out of the box or from the store. This weight refers to all packaging, hang tags, as well as the stuff sacks, fly, body, stakes, poles, and guy lines.

Trail weight:
This is the lightest you can expect your tent to weigh, stripped of everything but the essentials. This number reflects the weight of just the fly (no guy lines), body, and poles.

Fast-fly weight:
This is the weight of your fly, footprint and poleset only.

Fly Creek Platinum 2 info:

Packed Weight - 2lb 0 oz (32 oz) or 907grams
Trail Weight - 1lb 9 oz (25 oz) or 709grams
Fast Fly Weight - 1lb 3 oz (19oz) or 539grams
Footprint Weight - 5 oz or 142grams
