Light for backpacking, comfy for camping, protective for anything.

Big Agnes designed the Women's Ethel Sleeping Bag for campers and backpackers who aren't willing to compromise comfort or performance. Its DownTek water-repellent treatment helps the light and lofty down insulation retain its warmth in wet weather. Insotect Flow construction offers a revolutionary baffle design that mixes vertical chambers with Flow Gates to minimize shifting and deliver uniform heat distribution for near subzero temperatures.

A contoured design places the Ethel Sleeping Bag somewhere between a packable mummy and a roomy rectangular. Big Agnes treated the ripstop shell for water-resistance and the soft lining with stain-resistance for extra protection. There are also draft protectors at the collar, wedge, and down the full-length zipper. An integrated pad sleeve requires you to pair the Ethel with an accommodating sleeping pad for insulation at the bag's bottom.

    Great bag!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have another big Agnes that was not keeping me warm enough. This bag is awesome! It is a little heavier but keeps me toasty in the Sierra!
It has a pocket to keep your pad in place and condenses well.
The only reason for four instead of five stars that the inside of the bag is a super light color and I worry about keeping it clean after a few days in the backcountry. It is also a little heavier but totally expected given it is down and not ultralight. Would totally recommend!
I am 5'3 and 135 and the petite is perfect!

    So Cozy!

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I took this for a test drive camping for only one night with temperatures around 35 degrees F low. It was a huge upgrade from my old bag!! I usually sleep cold and my old 20 degree mummy bag often left me frigid despite wearing multiple layers of clothing and temps in the mid-30's. (I was always in awe of people who slept in only base layers!) I also used to have horrible sleep quality because my hip joints and lower back ached from being forced to sleep in a mummy position. So far, I'm really impressed with this bag. I slept in only base layers, I could spread my legs out, my arms had more room to move, I tossed and turned my normal amount with plenty of space and no pad/bag slippage. Plus, the extra layer near my neck kept me very toasty. I used it with my thermarest pad (not the recommended one) and it was very toasty but not a good fit into the sleeve (btw, how cool is that sleeve feature?! Puts the down insulation where you need it and not where you don't). I'll probably buy a new pad to match better. Only negative is that it's a bit heavy at over 3lbs, but comfort and sleep quality are worth it to me. I'm 5'3" ~135lbs and the petite was a great fit.

    Perfect Bag!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've had this bag for 2-3 years now and absolutely love it! I'm a cold sleeper and do a lot of my hiking trips in the summer and fall between 10k-12k feet. After years of being too cold in a synthetic bag- sealed up tightly, trying to warm the inside of my bag with my own breathe in the middle of the night- I finally decide to spend the money for a down bag... And that has made all the difference!

Not only is it lighter and more compact but I actually sweat sometimes and have to open the bag because I get too hot. I also like the integrated sleeping pad sleeve. I toss and turn and would often roll off my pad at night. But with this bag, even if I'm not sleeping on even ground, I stay on my pad and in my bag all night.
I have the petite regular bag and am 5'2" 130 lbs and have plenty of room to move in the bag.

    Love this bag

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I sleep cold and this bag has really helped to keep me warm while backpacking. The pad going into the sleeping bag really helped me. I tend to move around a lot before I go to sleep. Before I would keep waking my boyfriend up every time I moved. Now with this sleeping bag and the pad that going inside it we both sleep much better! This bag is great for camping. I have used it for backpacking. I bought a compression wet sack bag to help pack it down more. I am 5'10" and the regular fits me well. I can sleep on my side , and there is room for me to switch sides without feeling like I need to unzip the bag. This was a great choice for me!

    super warm bag

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This bag is the ideal set up for someone who gets way cold at night! I paired it with my sleeping pad to add insulation to the bottom; there's a sleeve to keep the pad in place throughout the night so no more slipping off! The zipper goes all the way up to keep you snug and even includes additional material around the neck to keep you way cozy. I usually run really cold at night but using this bag has changed it up and I couldn't be more pleased!

    Kept me warm so far

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I sleep cold so even if it only gets into the 30s I need more than most to help keep me warm through the night. I've only used this bag once so far on a camping trip. The temperature was in the high 30s each night but it was damp each night. I used a fleece liner and I wore a hat. It kept me toasty warm and I was very comfortable. On the 2nd night I was even able to sleep without my hat. I've read some reviews where folks talk about the bag not being able to keep them warm. I'm not sure what they were using underneath them but I would wager that has a lot to do with it. I was using a Big Agnes Insulated Core pad with their Sleeping Giant memory foam. I move around a lot at night so being able to stay on my sleeping pad for the first time in years was amazing. I'm 5'0 and weigh about 120 lbs. The petite was just right to be able to have a liner, sleep with my clothes for the next day and still have room to sleep on my side. The only bummer I have with this bag so far is that it went on sale the week after I purchased it but it's totally worth the money and I'm looking forward to more winter campouts and backpacking trips.

What're the max dimensions of a pad that can fit in the pad retainer?

Hey Shelbs - According to Big Agnes, recommended sleeping pad size for the Ethel is as follows. Petite: 20"x66" (51cm x 168cm). Regular: 20"x72" (51cm x 183cm). Do you have a specific sleeping pad you are looking to use? Feel free to contact me directly with any additional questions.

    Unanswered Question

Anyone have a guess at how this bag (or other Big Agnes bag+pad systems) would work on a paco pad for a river trip? I have an Aire landing pad that is way to big to fit the sleeping pad sleeve, and I'm worried there would be an insufferable draft on the bottom of the bag. I'm considering taking Ethel on the Grand Canyon... in January.

What pad sizes work with this sleeping bag?

Pad sizes that work with each sleeping bag size:

    Petite (Sleeping Bag): 20"x66" or 51cm x 168cm

    Regular (Sleeping Bag): 20"x72" or 51cm x 183cm
