Description
Keep the comfort—ditch the weight.
You don't want to sleep in something the size of a tube sock, but you don't want to carry excess weight into the backcountry, either. The Big Agnes Copper Spur UL3 3-Person 3-Season Tent (UL stands for ultralight) gives you enough room to move at night without adding too much weight to your pack.
- Polyurethane-coated, silicone-treated nylon ripstop floor and fly help rain bead off instead of soaking you and your gear inside
- Lightweight, durable polyester mesh and nylon body keep the weight down for longer weekend backpacking excursions
- All the tent's seams are taped without using solvents (PVC or VOC) to effectively lock out heavy rain and help protect wilderness watersheds at the same time
- TH72M Aluminum DAC Featherlite NSL pole system provides amazing strength and durability without weighing down your pack
- All Big Agnes tents feature poles and stakes made with DAC's Green Anodizing process, which eliminates the chemical polishing stage, reduces the need for hazardous chemicals, and recycles water throughout the rinsing process
- Freestanding, dome-like structure withstands harsh weather and wind while its DAC HClip attaches the tent body to the cross pole to provide more interior headroom
- Double vestibules (9sq ft each) and double doors give you and your buddies room to stow your gear and escape easily for midnight bathroom breaks
- Staked-out vestibules and zippered storm flaps on the vestibules seal out nasty three-season weather
- Rectangular 44sq ft (70in-90in) floor area provides enough space to fit three adults comfortably, and its 44in ceiling height allows sitting up and crouching when you get stir-crazy in a storm
- Entire tent weighs less than four pounds for easy hauling in the backcountry, especially when you split the weight between partners
- Mesh body lets fresh air in and lets hot air out during hot nights or muggy mornings
- Simple design uses press fit connectors, hubs, and twist clips that are easy to assemble while reflective details on guylines and webbing keep the tent visible in the dark
- Eight super-light J stakes secure the tent to the Earth during wind storms
- Fly Fast pitching option lets you carry just the poles, fly, and footprint (sold separately) for a lightweight (3lb 1oz) trek in mild climates
- Once packed into its included sack, the entire tent package is only 7in-22in for easy lashing to a pack or fitting inside a dry bag
- Interior mesh pockets hold your headlamps, map, or other small accessories close at hand
- Gear loft loops let you attach a gear loft (sold separately) for even more convenient gear storage

- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Used this tent on tons of backpacking trips, in pretty much all weather conditions except super heavy snow. When properly staked out, this tent is bombproof. Wind/Rain are not a problem at all. It also breathes really well, so you don't wake up to an inside full of condensation. Sleeps three average sized humans comfortably, and the twin doors and vestibules are awesome for easy access, day or night.
Super easy to set up and take down and stow, the tent is super light on the trail and is easily distributed amongst 2-3 people without loading anyone down or taking up much volume. Can also be carried by one person just as easily.
Fantastic tent from a fantastic company.

Initial impressions of the Copper Spur UL3 after a long weekend trip. We didn't have significant weather, but had both sun and rain. The tent was exceptionally room for 2 people with packs in the vestibules. Set up is a snap and the tent was sturdy and solid. Appreciated the height - we were able to sit up comfortably and enjoy time in the tent during a rainy spell. No condensation at night (used the fly, reluctantly, but wisely) which was a problem in my previous tent. As expected, it is a very light and easily packable tent. Footprint highly recommended as the floor of the tent is thin.

Posted this on the footprint page but I think it may get more views here...
Hi. I have the BA Emerald Mountain SL3 from a few years back and need a footprint for it. From the looks of it, the Copper Spur UL3 has the same dimensions, so is assuming this footprint would work with my tent a bad idea?

Hey Charlie,
It might be the same, but none-the-less, call Big Agnes directly @ 877-554-8975. They can tell you 100% and might even have the exact one you need hanging around somewhere. They keep a pretty good inventory and often can hook you up with either something new or gently used in some photo shoot or something. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Phil, that advice definitely helps, thanks! I emailed them last night but I'll try calling soon too.

I bought this tent when it was on sale at REI for $350 (2008 version) and I am glad I did. I had been looking around at tents to find one similar to my MSR Hubba Hubba in terms of structure and this one sets up very close to it. I wanted a comfortable 2-person tent and this does the trick (I use my MSR as a solo).
The tent is versatile and about as light-weight as you are going to get for the size and price. I haven't been through any storms with this one yet, only sunny warm weather. I do recommend getting the footprint, as I do with every tent I own to increase the longevity of the floor.

I have bought this tent (2008 version but the differences are small) for a two weeks hiking trip in the norwegian wilderness. The weight of the tent is a dream, it fits three persons perfectly wit enough room for the packs in the vestibules.
Although ultralight the tent withstood thunderstorms, hail and heavy rain without any problem. It was our save and reliable have under all conditions. Even considering the rather stiff price I would definitely buy it again.
With three people inside we experienced some condensation on the outer tent in humid weather, as to expected. But the inner tent never got wet and the venting is excellent thanks to the large mesh area in the inner tent. One thing you have to keep in mind is that in colder conditions you still have a constant airflow the tent. There the large mesh area is then a downside. Even with three people in it, the air in the tent will not get warmer than the outside air. Therefore I rate it as a 2.5 season tent instead of 3 seasons. If you plan to use it in cold weather adjust your sleeping bag choice accordingly.
The tent really is free standing, however I would highly recommend to tie it down with some lines in windy conditions.
I recommend the use of the footprint! Due to the lightweight design the floor is rather thin and I would not like to have it damaged by rough floor conditions.
Have fun

How about two adults and two adult dalmatians (60lbs each)? Thinking about using this for a Wind River Traverse, and torn whether to get this, the Fly Creek, or the same versions in a 4-person (each dog like a person, or half a person ...). Thanks.

I'll take the 4-Person and not the 3-Person for two adult dalmatians, are big dogs (:

Just bought the Fly Creek and took it back for this. Glad I did. To compare them:
You can actually fit 2 big packs in the tent with 2 people (tried a 110L + pack with a 52L pack)
The walls are much more vertical. You can sleep right next to the edge w/o feeling like the walls are pushing on you. This creates a lot more space.
A little bit higher, and higher for more of the ceiling.
Still super easy to setup. Just a couple more clips I think.
Of course the 2 doors right next to each person, so you could leave your whole pack right by the door and get to things easily as needed.
You could actually fit 3 people in this head to toe. With the flycreek, I think 3 people is more of a joke or for masochists.
.5 pound penalty worth it. I bet you could fit 2 dalmations in here too vs. 2 packs.

I did the same as the person below ("the outdoors are fun and stuff"). I also first bought the Fly Creek UL3 and ended up going for the Copper Spur UL3. Worth the extra 12oz weight. http://youtu.be/rjuIgEAfMbY?hd=1
