While Bern’s Watts Hard Hat probably isn’t the best choice to wear for your construction job, it’s versatile enough to be your go-to helmet for all of your skate, ski, bike and snowboard needs. Its hardshell construction encases a core of Brock Foam, which can take repeated hits without requiring replacement. And whether you’re on snow, at the skate park, or on single track, the visor brim improves visibility by shading your brow on sunny days and by keeping precipitation from falling right in front of your eyes.

  • Hard Hat version with Brock Foam is not EN/AST/CPSC certified for severe single impacts, but it is able to withstand multiple, lighter hits without requiring replacement (as compared to Zipmold and EPS foam, which is certified but must be replaced after a single hit, however hard or soft)
  • Sink Fit design fits the lid around your head (rather than on letting it ride on top), providing both advanced comfort and an ultra-low profile
  • Removable knit liner allows for year-round action-sport use—leave it in to fight off the winter chill and take it out when the weather warms up
  • Removable vent piece lets you air it out on warm days and trap in extra heat when it’s cold

Bottom Line: Say it 10 times fast: Hard Hat.

Would this helmet be suitable for some summer whitewater paddling

Would this helmet be suitable for some summer whitewater paddling action as well? I am looking for one helmet to suit all the fun summer and winter stuff I like to do.

No. I'm a whitewater paddler as well and I definitely only use helmets designed specifically for paddling. Nothing against this helmet, but I take whacks to the head often when creeking, and this just wouldn't be a good helmet to have on the river. It's not made for that. One shot and it's most likely done. However, I do own this helmet for skiing, and will continue to buy this model every time I need a new one. Great helmet.

Hard Hat will drain well, but honestly I wouldn't take this helmet on the water. The EPS liner option from Bern would be better than the Hard Hat, but for whitewater I'd definitely lean towards a Sweet helmet or something more specific to that activity. Rocks and whitewater is a pretty serious business and I wouldn't skimp on pro there. My two cents.

All about this helmet

By:
December 6, 2010

I switched to this helmet last year in attempt to save my skull for the inevitability of me falling on my face when I go riding, and this thing is great. It breathes well, looks nice (it has a brim, thats classy stuff!) and holds up to whatever I throw at it. I say, bring it on icy trails in need of grooming! I'm afraid but my helmet? is not ;)

Hard Hat Review

By:
February 7, 2011

After my friend got a concussion sans-helmet, I decided it was time to man up and get some skull protection. I really like the profile and matte finish, but I've already had to sew the fleece chin-strap guides back on. The biggest surprise has to be the warmth of the liner. I often have to take out the foam insert to open of the ventilation.

BUY IT

I have the baker hard hat, very similar to this model. Had the pleasure of suffering a concussion recently while wearing it. A helmet with suspension would no doubt offer more protection, however if I had not been wearing it I know I would have been in the hospital. Look at it this way, spending $50-100 on a helmet will most likely save you a few grand in hospital stays. Bottom line, buy it, wear it, ride another day. cheers

Something for the big round melons

By:
January 3, 2011

This helmet fits comfortably and does not make you look like a bobble head especially if you have a big dome. This will probably fit round melons better than oblong.
It's not a "certified" helmet but if a regular helmet doesn't fit you comfortably then this is better protection than a beanie.
On the downside, the felt on the helmet liner is not sturdy. The velcro attaching the winter liner can tear the felt off the inner liner on the helmet. This seems to be an ongoing issue for Bern since the same problem existed on my baker helmet. Otherwise a decent lid.

Finaly helmet perfection

By:
February 1, 2011

I have had a RED HiFi for the past 8 years, and was looking for a reason to get rid of it to justify a new helmet (finally the shell un-glued form the liner, woohoo).
So I decided to try the Watts Hard Hat, and I have not been let down. I love the adjustable venting, and knit liner. This helmet has been great on days -3C and days -40C with the wind chill. I love it!
If you care about your head and your wallet, you will buy this helmet.
