Brentwood w/ Visor Knit Helmet

If you're wearing the Bern Brentwood when the polar sun breaks through the winter cloud cover, you've got it made in the shade because the warm, removable knit liner includes a soft brim to combat glare on the peak. Bern's Zip Mold liquid foam injection process creates a low-profile, lightweight helmet without any loss of impact protection, and the Brentwood's Sink Fit actually conforms to your head's shape instead of just padding the pressure points like other manufacturers do. When you add Bern's 8tracks audio system, the Brentwood becomes a brimmed-out, private soundtrack provider for your massive park sessions, and when the snow melts, you can just snap out the liner and rule the same trails on your freeride bike without laying out for another lid.

Bottom Line: The Brentwood's brim makes it even more versatile than before.

Great helmet, cheap liner, no customer support

By:
July 1, 2009

I'll be brief. The helmet is comfortable, feels solid, and has kept my head cool. And, of course, it looks great. It came shipped with the winter liner attached, and when I removed it two of the snaps came undone with very minimal pulling on my part. I snapped in the summer liner and promptly emailed Bern about the liner, requesting a replacement. I have since emailed them again and have yet to hear a word from them. So I rate the helmet a 3 due to their complete lack of support. If they would have responded at all this helmet would get a 5 from me.

You could probably get away with the medium fit, but it might be snug, like, snug. I would say order that, and if it is too snug, then send it back and get the large. Backcountry has an unlimited lifetime warrantee, so it won't cost you extra.

Sweet helmet & has full safety rating

By:
December 1, 2008

I just bought this helmet and the BERN Watts Hard Hat. Both helmets are sweet, but only this one has a safety rating for full impact crashes (it has hard foam versus the soft foam in the Watts). With the knit brim its a little bit of a tight fit with my Oakley goggles and Dragon goggles, but I think it'll work...its just pushes the goggles down my nose slightly. Looks and feels good.
See Watts review for more details.

How do Oakley Crowbars fit with this lid? I was also wondering

How do Oakley Crowbars fit with this lid?
I was also wondering if the sizing between the Baker and this helmet have any correlation? reason Im asking is becasue i may have to purcghase the Brentwood online and may only be able to determine sizing via trying a Baker version.

They will fit great with Crowbar's. I know a lot of people that have that setup. Also the sizing on the Baker and the Brentwood is basically identical.

Excellent full-rated helmet

By:
December 16, 2008

I have the regular version (non-visored liner). Liners interchange easily and snap into place. Very comfortable, light, and low-profile. Worn in 50° weather with no liner, or as cold as -38° with insulated liner and a neoprene face mask with no issues. Also fully rated helmet for safety, not a "hard-hat" rated piece of junk you get over-charged for (do some research if you don't understand). Highly reccomended.

Pretty good as far as helmets go

By:
April 23, 2009

I use the the Bern Brentwood helmet for bike commuting to work and so far am very pleased with it - it's light, fits snugly, and is pretty comfortable. So far I'm also pleased with the temperature regulating components of the helmet as well. The knit insert fits well into the helmet and has kept me more than comfortable on cold morning rides to work. And, though it's still wintry here in Philly, on those warm days when i've gone without the knit insert i've found that the helmet vents keep me cool as well.

One small problem i've had with the helmet concerns the warm-weather protective insert that snaps in and replaces the knit visor/cap. When not using the knit cap, the helmet comes with a spongy, padded insert that snaps into, and runs along the interior circumference of the helmet. One problem with this insert is that one of the four snaps does not fit securely into the helmet. This is not the case for the knit cap - all four snaps fit in securely. Another problem is that the insert that came with my size medium helmet is far larger than the interior circumference of the helmet. I'm not positive whether an XL insert was accidentally put into my size M box or if Bern uses a one-size-fits all insert that is designed to be cut with scissors. In any case, I've solved the problem of the giant insert by folding the insert to make it fit. This works for me b/c my head measured exactly between the small and medium size, and based on good suggestions in comments below I went with the slightly larger size. But, depending on the size of your head the larger than usual insert may pose a problem. Also, though I really like doing business with backcountry.com, getting answers from BERN on this has been nearly impossible and between both companies I still don't know exactly what the deal is with this issue.

Overall, in spite of the minor snag, great helmet. I recommend.

Great helmet

This helmet is awesome! It looks really cool and the audio system is great. The fit is ok not quite like what the description says but it is still comfortable. Overall it is a great helmet.

eh. not as special as you'd think

By:

The fit was ok, but overall I am disappointed in the quality for the money. The summer liner does not actually snap in so i needed to rig extra velcro to hold it, and the winter liner is only warm on the ears, the top is mesh which means some wicked brain freeze on windy cold days, I have had to where another hat underneath to supplement. It is however, wicked light, so i guess that is a plus. The visor is worthless, it just gets in the way of your goggles.

Almost in love

By:

like the fit. barely felt like it was on my head. love the plaid flip visor liner, its has a much better fit than the nit liner . very warm. not sure why the guy above thought it was cold? Now i would LOVE this lid BUT the goggle clip doesn't have a snap. so if you aren't careful you may lose them off the back.
