Description

Performs beautifully, and doesn't look half-bad, either.

Believe it, the Bending Branches Amp 2-Piece Adjustable Stand-Up Paddle is as powerful as it is beautiful. An aviation-grade carbon shaft, with its light weight and super-strength, reduces fatigue and increases efficiency, and the red alder and black willow wood rounded, angled blade moves water like a sleek speedster. And this paddle adjusts for varying conditions and height. Even if it weren't gorgeous to look at, it's a beautiful thing.

  • Light, strong aviation-grade T-700 carbon shaft reduces fatigue, provides user-friendly absorption, and looks super-sweet
  • Ample 100 square inches of red alder and black willow wood make up the rounded, angled blade that moves water with precision and power
  • Easily adjustable length sets in two-inch increments for fine-tuning size to accommodate conditions and so you can let junior or your giant friend take a turn
  • Comfortable, modified T-grip provides secure hold, so you're not up the river without a paddle

AMPED - why yes, I am.

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Took this paddle on a 1 month journey to explore the wilds of British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest. I took another composite paddle to easily compare performance between this paddle and a fiberglass one (Item #BWK000J) Here are my findings.

* AESTHETICS: I'll be the first to admit this paddle has been on my wishlist on Backcountry for over a year. It's the most beautiful paddle we carry. The wood grain is unique and gorgeous and everywhere I went I received comments. Blade shape and angle was efficient, I had no problem keeping up with other paddlers.

*WEIGHT: This paddle was 1 oz heavier than the fiberglass one I was also testing. The Amp was 5.5 oz heavier than the carbon/Kevlar paddle I used last summer. That being said, I did not notice the extra ounces and the paddle felt lively and responsive in my hand. It has a great swing weight and unless you are racing in a professional capacity 5oz is not going to be noticeable. Paired with the carbon shaft the paddle was very solid and wasn't fazed by fast-moving water. I felt I could paddle efficiently and tirelessly which was especially important when I was paddling upriver on the Columbia River, which was CRANKING!

* COMFORT: Easy to use for longer journeys. I found the wooden T-grip secure and comfortable (which is not always the case because I have small hands). I thought it might be slippery, but that wasn't an issue.

*ADJUSTIBILITY: I really appreciate this feature, though it does add weight. I find that as SUP gains popularity someone ALWAYS wants to try my board and as a shorter paddler this feature allows me to let people give SUP a go. I think the mechanism was easy to use (just a push pin system) and liked it better than the clip lock system I've found on Boardworks paddles. It was easier to adjust on the fly but you are restricted to the 2 inch increments.

REVIEW CON'T

*DURABILITY – This paddle is durable since I banged it on the pavement and rocks on multiple occasions – no scuffs or dings. I did find that it wasn’t very resistant to scratches and I had to be much more careful with it than my Kevlar or fiberglass paddles. This obviously doesn’t impact performance, but on such a beautiful paddle you want to keep the aesthetic blade looking good – USE CARE around sharp objects!

* SUMMARY – I would absolutely buy this again and would heartily recommend it to a friend. This paddle is made in the USA and its unique aesthetics, scanty weight and great performance make for a quality product.
