When you need the whippet, there's nowhere else to turn. This pole skis just as well as my regular poles. I recently bent one of my BD expedition poles and have been using this most days; I really haven't noticed any difference whatsoever. Also, when you're front-pointing up something real steep there's nothing like being able to punch your fist whippet-first into the snow and feel that extra little bit of stability.

Bottom Line: Good for the up and the down.
