Gear Review

I have used this jacket for a few days in light rain and heavy wind. The waterproofing seems very good; I have no reservations about rocking it in nastier storms.

The fit is relaxed, which provides good ease of motion and allows layering underneath. The underarm zips are great for high-energy activities, both because they dump heat/moisture and they increase mobility in the shoulders.

This jacket is super packable. The self-packing zippered pocket is a lame gimmick; you can get it down smaller (and deploy it more quickly) by rolling it up.

The material is very light, but it is not soft at all and it makes a lot of noise (think crinkly tarp: good waterproofing, but not much comfort). There is zero insulation; it is a straight up rain shell. It will break the wind but that is all the warmth benefit this jacket has to offer on its own. On the plus side, you can layer underneath it.

Update time!

In heavy rain, the outer layer of the HyVent fabric becomes saturated after a few minutes. The inner membrane still stops water from soaking through, but once the outer layer is saturated the rain doesn't bead as well. This makes the jacket heavier, and it takes longer to dry.

Other than that minor issue, still love it! Seems to be holding up very well after quite a bit of use.
