Got the Gambler pack for Christmas. Was a little skeptical about its capabilities in the backcountry given its svelte dimensions. My BD shovel fits easily in the front pocket, and I would guess larger bladed shovels would do fine too. My BCA probe and shovel shaft fit nicely in the side pockets and are kept secure by cinching straps. Both skins for my skis (175cm, 110 waist) fit quite snuggly in the main pocket. Not really any room for snacks or camera. However, in the backcountry I didn't find this to be an issue really, as my skins usually find their home inside my shell while skiing, leaving room for other packables.
The backpack is very comfortable and low profile and I almost forget I'm wearing it. It works well for front country skiing as well, not burdensome wearing it on a lift. Nice little stash bag + water while skiing at the resort.
