Sweet addition to sleeping system

This is a great addition to a sleeping system. You can use a lighter sleeping bag, an ultralight tarp and this and have a very versatile system ready for any conditions.

Hi Justin. I'm a fan of yours but my initial question to Mont-Bell wasn't answered. If they recommend a ground sheet does that mean that the 'bivy' sack is not truly waterproof? How tough is the fabric actually? Did you use this in the Himalayas?

If you expect to stay totally dry you don't want a bivy sack... yes they can be waterproof but once you zip them up they are going to create condensation. Futhermore, of course this one isn't completely waterproof because it has no waterproof hood. They suggest a ground sheet for warmth and for protecting the bag, not for waterproofing reasons. You're best off with a tarp on top of the bivy if you want to go with a bivy.
