These really aren't bad approach shoes, the rubber is good. I use them only for approach though, they're SUPER fat shoes, I feel like I'm back in the early 2000's when super fat skate shoes were popular. So that's a bit annoying, I think if I bought another approach shoe I'd go with patagonia's cragmaster.

they do look like sk8 shoes. the flat front rubber seems like it would make them tough for dirt trails

yeah, some approach shoes are trying to keep the "climbing shoe" front but it definitely only gives you traction on scree slopes, scrambles and boulderfields. Any sort of dusty trail, mud, or anything like that sucks in these. Also, getting them the slightest bit damp makes them lose traction even on rock because they're so smooth. Tradeoffs!
