Pretty good, but altitude seems off

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Overall like this watch. Customizable to show the info you need and generates good GPX tracks. Battery life is good for all day ski-touring. Two things I'm less impressed by:

1. Suunto decided to offer integration with their website Movescount.com. To get GPX tracks to other websites, e.g. Strava, you must first upload to Movescount.com and then download and re-upload to Strava.

2. The track of ascension seems to be easily compromised. For example, the other day the watch read over 9,000 ft, but subsequent GPX upload showed the true gain to be nearer 5,000 ft (which our legs/bodies more easily concurred with). It's possible that air pressure changes that day were to blame, but that's a big discrepancy.

Given the cost, I'd rate the product adequate rather than awesome.

Have some experience with altitude measurements on the Ambit. Had a day where the Ambit and MovesCount indicate we ascended over 10,000 ft ski-touring. We felt it was nearer 7,000 ft, and uploading the GPX to both Google Earth and Strava gave a GPS based reading nearer 7,000ft. Going to contact Suunto customer support to try and figure out if I have a defective unit.

Suunto just replaced my watch for me. Awesome customer service... will check out whether the new one fixes the altitude issue.
