Gear Review

3 5

Ok, but not reliable

This is my 4th Suunto Core in 3 years. I've been impressed with the altimeter and barometer as compared to my previous alti/baro watch (Highgear), though the logging function does not work as well as the Suunto Vector. While the watch is functional, I would give it 4/5 stars, because the style is great and it is still surprisingly accurate if calibrated properly. However, the watch has continued to break. I've broken the watch's face from a light impact while climbing. The other times have been because when the battery is changed it has either stopped working entirely or eats through new batteries every week. This watch was the tool of choice for many guides whom I work with and I've unfortunately heard of the same battery issues a multitude of times.

Would you be able to post the first 3 numbers of the serial number found on the bottom of the watch? I have heard/read that they had a quality control issue with suunto cores made in 2008, and early 2009.
Personally mine hasn't had any issues, and it was manufactured in 2011.

I no longer have the watch, since I warrantied it when it stopped functioning. Suunto has a great 1 yr warranty and Backcountry.com has a lifetime return policy so returns and warranty claims are very simple.

Trent,
Backcountry.com's return policy is pretty easy and convenient. While it's not a "gear rental" service, if for some reason you're not satisfied with the purchase (for instance, if the Suunto Core stops working for you eventually) you can call Backcountry and a Gearhead will help you find a different product to exchange it for (the amount you paid on the original will be applied directly to the exchange) or provide you a full refund.

In regards to the Suunto Core, the functionality is efficient, easy, and detailed. My only complaint is that I've had issues with the reliability. The Suunto Vector has less features but has a great track record for reliability.

Using the return policy, was you given the option to replace the watch for the same watch or one of equal value? I am really interested in this watch, and was on the fence about until I saw your comments. I'm thinking with all of the research I have done a lifetime return policy is going to seal the deal and I will be owning a new watch depending on your answer of course.
