I was a bit hesitant to buy these as Stoic is a new brand, but I am glad I did! They are very well made, and fit very well. I will use these for backcountry touring, I wanted something lighter & more breathable than the shell ski pants I already have. I got my normal size, and they fit well. They are a bit slimmer than other pants I have/have tried on, but I don't mind. They fit fine over my tele boots. They do zip up the leg a bit, but don't have any type of liner inside to keep snow out so this may be an issue in deep power. They have a heavy reinforcement patch on the lower inner leg, which is pretty tough material. If you scratch it with your nail it makes a really loud sound (think chalkboard). All in all, I am happy with these, and can't wait to be able to use them! (P.S. "Not black" is a really dark gray, almost black.)*Update... changing from 5 to 4 stars. I've now used these several days. The fit is not as great as I initially thought. They do have a gap in the back, and I've gotten a back side full of snow a few times because of this. Still like the pants, they are very breathable (great for skinning) but the fit makes me think about swapping them out for something else...

My experience was similar, from simply trying them on at the store. The waist is larger than the hips and thighs which creates a gap in the back. Another deterrent was a defect in the ankle zipper. The zipper on one ankle was sewn too close to the fabric and would catch. My last complaint is the same as others have written, I'm usually a size 4 and I had to move up to a medium to fit the Stoic softshell pants. Go for 1 size larger than you'd expect. On a positive note: they are long. I usually have trouble finding pants that aren't high waters, these weren't bad in comparison to other brands. It's also hard to say no, because they are comfortable, flexible and most importantly look super flattering.

Should have taken advice on going up one size - I am size 6-8 and the medium was way too small in the gray. The black was not as small, but still very small for a medium.
