After my down bag got soaked in a rafting flip last year, I decided it was time to go synthetic. Synthetic is great because, unlike down, it can get wet and still insulate. Synthetic bags don't pack down as small and aren't as light, but it's worth it when you are camping near water. I am almost 5'5"and I went with a regular. I wish I would've gotten a long, even though it says it fits up to 5'6"because I feel like my feet butt up against the bottom of my bag all night. Also, I've used it a lot in the winter with a fleece liner, (super warm!), and when I do, I definitely wish I would've gotten a long. All in all, a good bag.
