Hokas make running fun!

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I wore these around the house for a few days when I got them, trying to decide if I would keep them. I was hesitating because the upper is not terribly sophisticated, not like my foot-hugging Solomon X-Wings that have an incredible dialed fit that works really well with my wide forefoot and high arches. I finally committed myself to them and went for a run ... wow! I generally don't LOVE running, but these Hokas make running fun! I've recently transitioned to forefoot ("barefoot") running and these accommodate that kind of gait, don't force me to heel-strike (I was worried about that, too). They're soft but not squishy -- in fact, there's quite a bit of rebound, which is most of the fun. I normally wear a 9 or sometimes 8.5 -- after reading reviews of other Hokas I went with the 8.5, which was just right. Overall these are great, just giving them 4 stars instead of 5 for the upper design, which could still use some work.

Responded on

Update after several months of use -- still very happy with them; two comments, one good & one bad. Good: tread offers excellent grip on snowy, even icy surfaces. Bad: upper, as anticipated. Tongue on the left shoe tends to slip to the outside and cause a hot spot on my instep unless I get it just so when I'm lacing up. It's manageable, but annoying sometimes. Next time I'll switch to the Stinson Evo, which has a wider, thinner tongue and also has quick lacing.
