This is the third coat I've bought in the last few weeks and the only one I'm keeping. I started out with the Mermont Ama Dablam, but decided to send it back after just a couple of days because it wasn't warm enough for NYC. I next tried the Mermont Aviate jacket, and returned it as well. I ordered the Mountain Hardware Downtown coat a few days ago but kept the tags on because I wasn't sure it was going to make the cut it either. Well, I happily snipped off the tags today because the Downtown coat has proven itself in the fifth biggest snowstorm to ever hit the Big Apple.
I've been outside all day shoveling snow, trekking to pick up rock salt and hunting snow plows - all in howling winds and face-freezing temps - and I've been toasty the whole time. I'm now confident that the Downtown jacket will keep me warm waiting at the bus stop or subway platform in 20-degree weather. If that's the kind of day-to-day activity you're involved in - I'd say get this jacket and head Downtown.
