Gear Review

Alpine standard

Ridiculously light carabiner that handles like a standard size Petzl Spirit. 100% NOT for sport climbing, but truly excel for traditionalists.

I disagree that these are not for sport. They clip well, and are full sized making them great for rope-end on sport routes IMHO.

That is true Aaron, but the reason for my critique is due to the deep I beam construction. This makes the major axis high wear area on the rope end carabiner wear at a much faster rate than something like the Black Diamond LiveWire that has a bar stock build. Have fun, and climb hard!

Responded on

Why not use them for sport climbing? As long as you inspect your gear and don't mind replacing more often if things wear, what's the problem? The new Petzl Spirit and Ange all use a "deep I-beam construction," but they're definitely for sport climbing use...

Responded on

The wear point on the Spirit and Ange is much thicker than that of the Photon. My argument comes from longevity, and with such a thin wear surface you'll be replacing these every season maybe more if you sport climb a lot. Maybe the "100% NOT for sporting climbing" was a little to strong a conviction, but I feel like if you wish to have the best possible gear for the job you also want it to last as long as possible.
