how durable is this jacket? Could it with stand sliding down a snowy mountain?
I have skied in this jacket a bunch, and it holds up well to the occasion tree branch encounter. However, it is a little on the thin side and the stretch isn't there--stretch for mountaineering purposes is a huge advantage. I'd either consider the Axiom still--slightly heavier weight than the Foray with stretch--or the Furio if you absolutely need to cut costs for some reason. The Furio has Pac-lite weight through the body of the shell but Pro-shell through the shoulders where you need extra-rugged protection the most.
Don't cut costs. The Axiom will function ever $$ worth you spend on it and will not disappoint you. It is the best lightweight mountaineering shell we make--read the article about it as Outside Magazine's Gear of the Year 2012.
