Would this jacket work well as a shell in a winter layering system? Could it stand up to the abuse of skiing/snowboarding? Would it keep me dry for hours on end?
Hi Tim Doyle,
Thanks for the question. When it comes to running the Mountain Hardwear Stretch Typhoon Jacket - Men's as a shell jacket for a Winter layering system, it would have its upsides and downsides.
You will stay pretty dry in this piece as the Dry.Q Core is as good as most Winter jackets in waterproofness and slightly better in breatheability.
That being said, the 30D nylon is a little frail in comparison to other Winter jackets and it may be too breatheable as it'll keep you warm while you're moving more than a bit, but stand still for more than a few minutes and unless you layer a little more heavy you'll feel that chill.
As long as you will be using this piece in actual trekking around similar to Alpine Touring for the majority of the time, it should work more than good. But, keep to a less breatheable and more durable jacket if you're looking for a resort only set up.
