I'm looking for a mid layer to go under a shell for climbing Mt. Rainier, is this overkill? Is this more of a softshell or more of a fleece?

Gary. The Desna Fleece would be a perfect layering piece under your shell for Rainier. It is a "hard faced" Powerstretch Fleece coupled with regular Powerstretch in the hood and on the sides of the jacket. 'Hardfaced' fleece is fleece that has been calendared or treated with a tiny bit of heat on the outer surface of the jacket to provide increased wind and weather resistance. Again, perfect for a mid-layer that will be used alpine climbing. As a matter of fact, I just ordered one of these for my self last week for similar reasons (ice climbing.) I hope this info helps!
