The only skirt here is for powder.

The Basin and Range Women's Empire 3L Shell Jacket has the chops to keep you dry during the season's worst storm days. The Empire's three-layer shell keeps you dry when your lines are steep, deep, and filling in after every run. Fully taped seams protect against moisture that would otherwise creep through, while a brushed backer provides just a pinch of warmth without making you overheat after another leg-burning run. And when you do need to dump excess heat, open up the two underarm vents for a quick cool down after a long, hot bootpack. The hood on the Empire is fully adjustable and helmet-compatible, and the integrated powder skirt walls out snow when the snow is chest-deep.

    • Three-layer shell for skiing, snowboarding, and après
    • Waterproof and breathable with fully taped seams (10k/10k)
    • Brushed tricot backer offers a pinch of warmth
    • Underarm zips vent excess heat
    • Integrated powder skirt seals out snow
    • Hood can be adjusted to fit around ski helmets
    • Adjustable cuffs form a snow-tight seal around gloves
    • Regular fit leaves room for insulating layers without being bulky
    • Item #BNG000C

What do you think about this product?

    Have questions about this product?

    Maybe for skiing, not snowboarding...

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: M

I was looking for a snowboard jacket and I like a longer (at least 5" or so past the top of my pants) jackets so that the snow and doesn't get in when I sit down on the slopes. This jacket was so short the snow guard wasn't even overlapping my pants (I do wear low rise pants). Maybe it would work for skiers, who do less sitting on the slopes and don't need as long of jackets? I still loved the jacket, but it was a bit too expensive to keep as a glorified rain jacket. The quality, colors, and fit (length aside) were all really pleasing to me though, sad I had to return it.

Wanted to give 4 stars, but...

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium

Great color, exterior fabric, and medium runs true to size.
Unfortunately, lining on inside of powder skirt is flaking off after only a handful (less than 5) of wears. Incrementally flaking off more each wear. Had to just stop using powder skirt entirely.
Rear of powder skirt needs to be longer proportioned (at least 5 inches or more) in torso to stay in place when actually moving/bending/doing anything for those of us with longer torsos.
The rear of powder skirt, after only a few turns, moves above my belt loops and renders itself useless, even when wearing a belt to help to hold it down and in place.

    Great jacket

I bought this jacket for my wife to use this winter. While she is typically an XS in most jackets, I purchased a S so that she could layer underneath. This worked out perfectly since this jacket is just a shell and requires layers underneath on a cold day. She really enjoyed the underarm ventilation zippers and also the fact that the inside of the collar is lined where the zipper meets the face. Great color as well. All in all this was a solid purchase that she is excited to use for the rest of the season.

    I love this Jacket!

This was a Christmas gift to my mom who has been teaching skiing at The Canyons Resort and Deer Valley Resort for many years and am making her review this item.

I love the Basin & Range Coat, it's not too bulky through the waist and it has pit zips and pockets in all the right places. The hood fits great over my helmet for those stormy ski days.

    Versatile Jacket

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

I have used the jacket several times and this versatile jacket has preformed great! In 35 degree weather I have opened up the vents to stay cool and in 15 degree weather, I layered a light weight jacket underneath and stayed warm. The two zippered hand pockets are roomy enough to hold a spare pair of cloves, wallet, phone, keys etc.

    She loves it

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
    • Fit: True to size

I bought this for my girlfriend and we were both worried it wouldnt be warm enough, especially comparing it to my thick snow jacket. Well she has used it several times now and loves it. It is lightweight yet maintains warm temperatures even in -3 degree temps ( the coldest its been since owning it).

    Sizing the Empire jacket

Model is 5'8 135 lbs, wearing a medium. You can see the color is more teal in person, than on the site.

    Great Shell

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

I have yet to put this shell through the wringer, but so far I am very happy with it! You can tell that Basin and Range created a durable jacket that can handle all elements. The design and materials of this jacket excel at keeping you dry on the wet days when the sky is dumping. It is also great at repelling wind, even with underarm vents they are sealed to perfection and keep the air out and you nice and warm. This jacket is comparable to the top end brands out there, but the price point is very reasonable. If you are looking for a durable, well priced jacket, this is a great option!

The product fits true to size. However, I will say the picture is a bit misleading and the jacket has a darker blue hue to it than green as it appears. I have black pants to go with the jacket so it was not a deal breaker for me.

Any fleece lining around the chin? Also, what kind of layering would be needed under this on a cold ski day (i.e., does it need heavy puffy/fleece layers, or is pretty warm on its own)?

    Best Answer

    Hi Annie,

Thanks for the great questions! This does have fleece around the chin, and over the top of the zipper.

This jacket is a shell, which gives you tons of flexibility on how and when you can use it. So, you can insulate with this, based on the temperature of the day, and the activity you are doing. You can use it alone, on a moderate day, with lots of rain or snow. Or, you can layer with a heavy fleece or puffy coat, on freezing cold days and nights, and stay warm and dry, even if it's raining or snowing. If you are on the slopes with it, and know you will get your heart rate up and sweat, it would be great with just an active fleece jacket.
