Group fav!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

On a 3- day trip this was declared the clear favorite meal of the group. I've since been told it will be a required meal on all future backpacking trips. Delicious, the flavors really stand-out from a lot of the dehydrated meals, it was nice to shake things up with something so unique and yummy.

Tasty!

This is probably the most extravagant dehydrated meals that I tried from Mountain House. I had no idea what to expect from the finished product but I was pleasantly surprised. For how quick and easy it is to prepare it's worth it.

I do prefer the Beef Stroganoff out of their line if dehydrated meals.

How long do these products last in storage?
I was just wandering how long till they expire because I don't live in the US but I love hiking trips and I would apreciate having those light weight tasty meals with me. Thanks in advance

The shelf life is 7 years. You should be able to get a little longer out of it, but the longer it is past the best by date the more likely it will spoil.

A good effort

It's not exactly restaurant quality but I think that'd be asking much of a freeze dried meal. BP really tried on this one with the oil packet and all. It's delicious and a treat on the trail.

Not bad at all

A great balanced and delicate flavors are what sold me on the sweet and sour rice. One suggestion to the user will be to let it "cook" for about 5-10 more minutes than what the instructions suggest as I've found that some of the flavoring takes some time to evenly distribute itself (of course stirring in between helps too). It will vary by person, but I'd say the serving is more like 1 ~ 1.5 if this is all you're having for dinner. The delicate flavors are great in that there's none of that excessive sweetness or saltiness, which leads you to believe that you're eating relatively healthy while backpacking. I wouldn't say it's as good as any Chinese restaurant (unless maybe you've only been exposed to the Americanized Chinese food) as that would be an insult to the cuisine. My only minor complaint is that I don't think the container has to be that tall which makes it hard to eat out of.

Sweet and sour as good as any restaurant

This is better sweet and sour chicken than I've had in many Chinese restaurants. No cloying sweetness, instead, there are peppery bites, a good amount of chicken and the rice was cooked better than a rice cooker could do it. That was an engineering marvel in itself in my opinion. If there were a fault with this, it would be that the pineapple didn't hydrate as perfectly as everything else. It was slightly crystalized and chewy but still imparted good flavor. Overall, I'd count on this as a staple in my kitchen for a Chinese food craving instead of ordering takeout! I can only imagine how awesome it would taste after hiking all day.

Satisfying

For a meal on the trail this is pretty good. I was a little disappointed when I found there wasn't much chicken in it. It seems like it had an overwhelming amount of pineapple. Maybe I got a bad bag, but the flavor was good and plenty of food for two people. I'd give it a shot again.

Deeeelish!

I saw this meal described somewhere as "chinese take out on the trail", so of course it piqued my interest. And, I was plesently surprised by just how good it was. The sweet & sour sauce rivals with any that I've had at chinese take out joints. There's a lot of chicken. And, it comes with a pack of organic olive oil, which I thought was a nice touch. Definitely can't go wrong with this one! My girlfriend and I shared one package and we were satisfied.
