Eating the Backpacker's Pantry Louisiana Red Beans and Rice is kind of like bringing Mardi Gras with you out on the trail. Just without the beads. Or alcohol poisoning. Or loss of dignity.

Food

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

You eat it and in turn your body uses it as fuel that you can use to continue on your adventure. This particular food fuel is more tasteless than not, but it was quite palatable after adding salt and hot sauce.

DON'T FORGET TO TAKE THE PRESERVATION PACKET OUT OF THE BAG BEFORE ADDING WATER. Made this mistake over the weekend and my meal turned into poison :(

Not a fan

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I've never had authentic Louisiana Red Beans and Rice but I would expect they taste a whole lot better than this did. I really could not appreciate these even after I added some chicken, hot sauce and cheese to it. That's even after a day of hiking up and down the river. I would much rather stick with the Chili Mac.

So so non meat option

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I prefer to get meat-less options on long days. If you get this one definitely bring an extra sauce you prefer or some flavored tortillas. It's a ton of rice and beans and I found the flavor to be very bland.

Very good.

For a backpacking meal this is great. Has good flavor. Tastes great with a little Old Bay and some hot sauce.

Yum!

Perfect! Has a little kick that you expect from red beans and rice. I add slightly less water so it comes out a little less soupy.

GREAT, JUST THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF SPICE

Made this on my trek this weekend. It somes out a little watery like gumbo so I cooked up two cups of quinoa and mixed it in. MAN that hit the spot!
