Description

Shift into the next gear of outerwear versatility with the Backcountry.com Shift Softshell Jacket.

At Backcountry.com, we're not about to slap our logo on a glorified piece of polyester and call it a softshell. We asked one of North America's top textile companies to help us design a jacket that could see us through countless ski tours, alpine climbs, and hikes into the highlands. After near-endless prototypes, we finally created something that was worthy of the Goat logo--Backcountry.com's exclusive Women's Shift Softshell Jacket. The Shift's Polartec Power Shield softshell fabric stretches four ways for total freedom-of-movement, blocks 98% of wind, and has a water-repellent coating that'll keep you dry in all but the nastiest conditions. A performance cut ensures a streamlined silhouette that minimizes bulk and maximizes mobility. We included interior pockets for your iPod, phone, and wallet; fleece-lined pockets to warm your digits; and a laminated wrist pocket for your small stuff. When comparable jackets go for close to $300, it would be crazy to let this deal slip away.

I really wanted to love it....

I had already ordered another softshell from TNF, but had to return it because it made me look like a box, so I was super excited about go around #2, but alas was ultimately disheartened. The shoulders were too broad and the jacket was too short (and I have a short torso), so I never wanted to wear it because it looked funny. Functionally, it was great, but I just didn't feel cute in it. After a season of it always being passed over in the closet, it had to go back, and I guess I shall persevere in my quest for a replacement.

Poor fit-- had to return

I was excited about the quality of this jacket after reading so many reviews. I wanted something versatile that could be worn around town or worn climbing to keep out the wind/water.
I ordered an XS, my usual size in outdoor gear (5'9, 120lb), and was really surprised by the strange fit of this jacket. First, it is surprisingly short for a sporty softshell-- a bit of a bummer, but something I could have overlooked if the rest of the jacket fit well.
The jacket is flared at the bottom (though you could cinch it tighter with the drawcord if you'd like) and fitted through the waist. The strange thing is that around the the chest and upper arms the jacket is super roomy-- too roomy. And the stiff fabric makes the upper portion look and feel restrictive and boxy.

And the hunt for the perfect soft shell continues...

I just ordered the Stoic Luft Down insulated...

I just ordered the Stoic Luft Down insulated sweater. I was planning to wear it with a shell, and I'm wondering two things. One - is this a good plan in general? Two - would this be a good shell for that? It's for a snowshoeing trip. Any gear advice is appreciated!

Responded on

It's an excellent idea if you anticipate running into any kind of wet or windy weather. A shell will keep the down dry and the wind off. This could be a good shell, depending on the conditions you expect to face.

Because it's a softshell it's not really waterproof, and will eventually become wet in the rain. It has a water repellent treatment on the outside that sheds some precipitation, but much more than light rain and you'll get a bit wet. On the other hand it does breathe well, which is a concern when you're snowshoeing, and it blocks wind nicely.

If you want more substantial weather coverage check out the technical shell section of the jackets. Everything there is waterproof breathable, which is not as breathable as this guy, but will keep you dry in pretty much anything. You could keep the Stoic theme going with the eVent Stash or Bombshell jackets. I also like the Mountain Hardware shells.

Lastly, this piece has a slightly fleecy lining to it, which may make it more difficult to layer. You may find sleeves bunching a little more readily with this, although the taffeta outside on the Luft makes that less of a problem.

Great Quality

Bought this for my wife as an early Christmas present. I was impressed by the product that I received in the mail. The quality is excellent, the style and color are great, and the fit is exactly what she wanted. The only negative I have found with the jacket is that there is a little too much fabric under the arms, which causes the jacket to bunch a little in that area. Overall I would give the product two thumbs up and recommend it to anyone in the market for a softshell. There is no need to spend the money buying a North Face or Arcteryx when you can buy this. I have all three and the quality is no different between them.

How would you clean a melted butter stain...

How would you clean a melted butter stain off this jacket? I just got mine (hooded version), and stained it eating crab legs on an outside patio.

Responded on

find something called Sard Wonder Soap from Australia. It's the best (and natural) stain remover EVER. What's great about it is that if the entire stain doesn't come out the first time, use Sard again and it will work -- even if your garment was in the dryer.

Write your question here... what degree...

Write your question here... what degree is this jacket we can get to -5 here in Australia

Responded on

On those -5 days, you would want to use this as a layer rather than the only jacket you are wearing. On those 35 degree days this should do the trick.

Responded on

JRappGuru means 35 degrees F. -5 C is probably about right for this jacket. Maybe a little on the cold side, but I haven't tried my mens version out in near zero weather yet.

Not my fave

I was very excited about this jacket but the fit is just not doing it for me.

The shoulder/chest area is a bit boxy (I know they're trying to be feminine and give it some shape, but the material is too stiff to form to your actual shape, so -- for me, anyway -- it ends up just getting it wrong). The upper arms are very wide and taper dramatically toward the wrists, which just contributes to the boxiness in the upper part of your torso area.

Wish I could have tried it on before I bought it. It deals with wind decently, though it's a bit short (I'm sort of tall -- 5'8" -- so maybe it was not intended for me).

All in all, the jacket looks/feels like it was built for a short, slightly plump middle-aged person. I'm sure it's great for many people, just not me.

Responded on

Thanks for the info. Like you, I'm long and lean (5'9") and I've been searching for a softshell long enough to fit my torso without being too wide. Can you recommend something with a good fit?

I love this soft shell jacket!

I have the black one. It has a thin fleece lining. Very cozy soft shell, very functional and good looking. It's been cold, so I wear a wind shell over it. I am looking forward to spring so I can show it off more.

Backcountry.com Shift Softshell Jacket

Great product. The jacket runs a little small, so I suggest buying one size up. It is very stylish, and is cut to fit and accentuate perfectly. The jacket is waterproof and very warm. The only reason I didn't rate this product perfectly is because it runs small and short. I had to exchange the product the first time. However, the customer service was wonderful, quick and helpful.

Nope. Check out the "cinch" photo in the detail pics, that'll show you what the inside looks like.

Awesome...

Got this for my wife for christmas in black, and she loves it. Excellent construction and she found it to be surprisingly warm. This looks sharp on (very feminine fit with accent colors) for her size, but if you are on the tall side it might be a little short. Great overall jacket.

Nice jacket, weird fit.

Nice softshell... but weird fit. Slender through the torso area, and LARGE through the shoulders and upper arms.

Despite the fit, I kept it, and though I don't wear it out on the town, I do wear it for winter running (as a top layer) or skiing in frigid conditions (as a mid layer).

I am interested in this coat in Black, size M. Will there be more of these available? Or would a S be fine: 5'3", normally W's M in most shirts/coats. Does this run large?

Responded on

Little big in the shoulders/chest

I bought this jacket as an XS for my fiance. She is 5'6" & petite but the I thought an XS would be fine. It was quite large in the shoulders and a little big in the chest but every other aspect fit well. Obviously a high quality jacket. Wish she could keep it.

Hi - I bought a North Face Windwall Jacket...

Hi - I bought a North Face Windwall Jacket but realized it wasn't the right type of jacket I was looking for. Instead I want to order the backcountry shift softshell Ladies extra large. Can I come to the store and exchange it? or should I do the new order online and then return the NorthFace? Thanks

Awesome Jacket!

This jacket is the best softshell i have ever had. It has the protection of a winter jacket but breathes so it is versatile for all seasons. One of the things that is best about this jacket is the feminine cut. I did not want a big baggy jacket but one that was nice enough that i could wear around town in the winter. I get many compliments on it. Get this jacket!

I dig

This is a really cool jacket. I get lots of compliments on it. It's also extremely comfortable.
