Slightly lighter than its namesake and sporting some sexy new lines, the Backcountry.com Men’s Limited Edition Shift Softshell Jacket resolves your I’m-not-sure-which-jacket-to-take dilemmas. Don the Limited Edition Shift and tackle that spring skin track without fears of overheating, or freezing your balls off when you reach the ridgeline—this softshell is all about regulating your temperature. Mechanical-stretch Polartec Power Shield exterior fabric stands up to light moisture, wind, and allows heat to escape when you work up a sweat. Welded zipper construction cuts down on bulk and weight. Oh yeah, and the price is pretty amazing, too.
Bottom Line: Not sure which jacket to take? Pack the Limited Edition Shift Softshell.
Wore it on a winter backpack through the smokies. It was cold, windy, and rainy, and I stayed warm and dry. I was skeptical about its ability to breathe. I thought it would keep rain out only to soak me from sweat. I was wrong! This is the best possible jacket to have in cold, wet weather. And it costs MUCH less than that A brand. And its made in Canada, A brand is made in China.
Is there ANY chance I can get this jacket in RED/M???..I go on SAC and they only have ONE and it's gone before I can click on my mouse..I'll pay more for it.
hey tony, i went and found a few for you ...you can get the shift element in "Big red" here BCC0194, but they only have size small ...and you can get the original shift softshell in "Sangria red" here BCC0056, but once again they only have small (copy those item IDs into the search bar and hit enter) ...those are the only red bc softshells, you probably couldnt find them cuz they were in the outlet

I'm 5'10, 180, athletic build. I bough a medium. This jacket is made from the same fabric as an Arc'teryx Gamma SV, with similarly excellent construction. The fit differs slightly. The Shift jacket is slightly longer. The Shift neck is smaller. The wrist openings of the Shift are too big. If the wrist openings weren't so big it would be perfect.
Is the weight similar to that of the Arcteryx Gamma MX or SV? Does anyone know how much this weighs? Looking for a similar weight softshell to the Gamma MX, just hopefully for less money.
The color made me a bit hesitant but now I'm rocking it just about everyday. I'm 5'11" and about 160 and the medium fits pretty snug (much more so than my M marmot sharp point jacket). The cut is definitely 'athletic' and it's plenty warm as a stand alone piece for Fall. Might have to layer up a bit more for winter.
Does anyone know how this compares to the Backcountry.com Rime Softshell? I know they're both made of Power Shield, but it looks like this might be a bit heavier. I like the Rime for fall/spring and this looks like it'd be great for the winter. Any comments? Is it any thicker/heavier than the Rime even though it's the same base material?
The Shift softshell is a heavier material, and as you said perfect for fall/winter/spring. even though a little heavier, it has a full zip, hand warmer pockets, and more durable face fabric. the rime is great for spring/summer/fall, and half the weight of a shift jacket.
the fit of this jacket seemed a little awry to me. I actually loved the color, the fabric and most importantly of the pro's, no flashy logo. with that said, the jacket lays on the short side (why does every company do this?) and the arms are awkward in the sense that in the shoulder area, you could fit two more pairs of arms. I obviously returned the item, but it may seem fit to you should you be a swarzenegarrian.
I absolutely love this jacket, I wear it everyday. On its own it can handle around 35 degrees and up, but when the gauge dips below that point, just throw on a sweatshirt underneath and its bomber. I'm 5'11 160, I got a large and it fits perfect, not as snug as I've heard others say but it works for me. I personally love the color, no one else has the same jacket as I've got, and it goes with most articles of clothing streetwise. Technically it's amazing, blocks about 90% of wind, vents great on hikes, I've even used it snowboarding as both a shell and a baselayer. Couldn't ask for any more, maybe some velcro on the cuffs to close those off, but still my favorite jacket right now.
I just bought one of these in the golden lime for $64.99 on SAC.
I have now worn the jacket for a week and found it's very well constructed, perectly fitted and has nice features. I like it even better then my Patagonia Coreskin or any other softshells I own.
I also scored the Shift LE for a ridiculously low price at SAC - but I think it's worth the $160. Made in Canada, the Polartec Power Shield will run you over $200 from other brands & it will keep you nice & toasty/dry without sweating you out.
The fit of the L is perfect for my 6-3, 180lb frame. This jacket is definitely not overly technical, but it has the essentials: good fit in the neck, 3 pockets that work well, a decent cuff (though a velcro cuff would be nicer) & a drawstring at the bottom to keep the chill out.
Surprising bonus: the color does NOT induce projectile vomiting.
Yup. Go for the Backcountry.com Shift base model. The not limited edition version.http://www.backcountry.com/store/BCC0056/Backcountry-Shift-Softshell-Jacket-Mens.htmlYou would think they'd pick a different color if it was limited. Because this color seems to not be so popular.
Let me be the first to say..."Amazing". Light weight, wind proof, and warm!! Got an awesome deal at SteepandCheap.com and paid a fraction of the cost..$60 with shipping. Love it and you will too!
While I was a bit hesitant about the color, I absolutely love this jacket. It's very light and comfortable but still quite warm. The cut of the jacket is pretty snug (much more so than my Marmot Sharp Point) and it looks great. Wind-wise, it holds up fine biking around but gets a little chilly when i switch to the motorcycle (where the Sharp Point really shines). I love showing off the goat and you certainly can't beat the price.
