We don't use the Goat logo lightly. And we didn't put the Goat logo on the Backcountry.com Women's Shift Composite Softshell Jacket until we absolutely knew we'd rely on it for our own backcountry journeys. The Shift Composite uses Polartec Power Shield fabric to block 98 percent of the wind yet breathes enough that you don't die of heat during your spring ski tour. With four-way stretch and an athletic cut, this water-repellent softshell won't restrict your motions, and it doesn't crinkle and shuffle like hardshells do. An MP3 pocket brings your tunes along on your mountain adventure. At half the cost of a comparable branded jacket, we question your sanity if you don't grab this softshell.
Bottom Line: The versatile Shift Composite covers you in all but the nastiest weather and costs a lot less than those other softshells.
I ordered a large based on reviews and it fits generously (I'm 5'7", 130 pounds), but I can layer under it as a result. It's lighter than I would have thought, but also warmer, so it's become a great addition for morning hiking, evening camping, etc. I have another soft shell which weighs more, but isn't as comfortable or as warm, so it's in the back of the closet now. Looks better on than in the photo, although I wish it came in darker colors. Great piece of gear!
As the center of gear knowledge, Backcountry.com wants you to be as informed as possible when buying high-end gear, and we've compiled price listings from some other reputable retailers for you to compare. Although we take steps to confirm this information is accurate and updated, we assume no responsibility for the accuracy of the price and shipping information provided by other vendors.
The Shift Composite has an obviously tailored cut - aiming to provide a more flattering fit. The hem DOES contain a drawcord allowing you to customize the fit even more and prevent any unwanted drafts from entering through the bottom hem of the jacket.
Toured all last year, mostly in Montana. This is a great softshell -- warm, yet breathable. Seems to adjust to whatever temp is outside. If you're on the fence, BUY IT!
Does anyone know how this tends to fit around the upper body? I'm fit but curvy, usually a size 12 or large (mainly to accomdate "the girls" - athletic wear always seems to fit small across the chest). Any thoughts?
I really like mine. A lot. It's not too tight at all but it is fitted. I wear a large and this jacket first well. Great thing about Backcountry, you can always return it if you're not thrilled.
My husband just got me this jacket for my birthday, and I'm already loving it. I wore it in 25 degree WINDY weather, and it did a terrific job of blocking the wind. It is more lightweight than some softshells, but the material is more flexible and softer than many others. It does run a little on the small size with a trim, athletic look - definitely fits like a jacket and not a coat, so I don't think you could layer too much underneath unless you went up a size. All in all, backcountry made a super comfortable, soft, attractive, and technical jacket with this one!
I love the way this fits...an xs is just right; I am just under 5 feet tall and 100 lbs. Things are always too long in the torso, but this fits just right at my hips. I was a little concerned that the grey box on the front was too square at first, but I got used to it. I have worn it through the fall alone and under another shell in colder weather...definitely not a stand-alone ski coat. It was also more waterproof than i expected...rain has been beading right off. I also love to pocket...my ipod sits in it just right when I am running. I would buy it again!
I really like the material used for the jacket, and the color was pretty, however I had to returned the jacket cause the fitting was tight around the body down to the waist, seem small for a medium size. the length of the sleeves was true to the size...and i was thinking if I will exchange it to a bigger size like large, that the length of the sleeves will be longer...I usually fit in size medium and sometimes small fits me too but large jacket, that I don't have. patagonia and north face are more true to their sizes I think?
Is blue the only color this jacket comes in? I am looking for the color pink /grey or purple/grey. Which ever jacket is the most popular amoung the young girls. Can you tell me which it would be? Thank You
I bought this jacket for my fiance. At first, I was heasitant to buy an off brand coat (not Marmot, Salomon, North Face, etc.). When I recieved this coat and took it out to look at it, my mind was put at ease. She and I cross country ski quite a bit. She had a jacket that did not wick the moisture away from her mid layer, therefore she would get cold. This jacket is very nice. It does what it is designed to do. It is a very nice looking jacket. I will say that I had to order an XL, and she wears a medium winter coat. The sizes are very small. Overall the coat looks nice, feels nice, does a great job at keeping her warm, and it moves well. Great coat.
This softshell is short in the waist. The back is extended but it's as long as the front should be. I'm 5'8'' and pretty fit so I got the small so it wouldn't be too boxy. The color is nice and this jacket looks pretty slick otherwise.
Ordered this for my wife in a Small, and had to exchange it for a Med. The fit was a little too "athletic" for her. Fit was true to size in the chest, with a bit too much taper into the belly. Very nice softshell jacket!
I'm 5'5" and 113lbs -- generally a size two or a size 0. The reviews said it ran small so I got a size small rather than an XS and the fit is...odd. It's big through the chest (but then I have none!), shoulders and arms but fits (almost tight) around the hips.
But I love it anyway especially since it got it for a song on SAC. It's big enough that I can layer under it and it's sufficiently water resistant that I'd take it skiing or ice climbing on a clear day and not worry too much (although I'd also pack a real shell just in case). So far though I've only worn it to kick around town.
I've had this jacket for a year and it's a staple in my wardrobe. It's pretty water-resistant, and moves great. It's not bulky at all which makes it great for layering. The only problem I have with this jacket? It always looks dirty, and picks up dirt at the seams especially...even right after I wash it.
