Comfortable enough for yoga class and tough enough for bushwhacking through over-growth, the water-resistant, highly breathable softshell Backcountry.com Women’s Overhang Pant owns the trail from early spring to late fall. The Overhang Pant’s summer-weight Polartec Powershield softshell fabric vents body heat as you move and the Hardface fabric treatment stands up to abrasion and pilling through seasons of abuse. An ergonomic design and 4-way stretch softshell fabric offer a flattering fit on trail or off and multiple pockets put your essentials close-at-hand.
Bottom Line: The superlative do-anything softshell pant.
These pants are pretty awesome -- I've never had a pair with more stretch which makes them great for climbing. Love the snaps for rolling the pant legs up, they don't stay up without them. They are super comfortable & flattering but I definitely would change a few things: --the sizing is really off in my opinion. I'm 5'5" 150 lbs & have always worn a medium in any brand of pant, so I ordered the medium in these. They were extremely form-fitting around the legs & butt to the point that I felt uncomfortable -- I exchanged them for the large, which definitely fits better but is slightly baggy in the crotch & pretty big in the waist. --the description states that these pants have two pockets in the back, two in the front & one cargo. I don't know about the rest of you, but mine don't have front pockets & I wish they did. I like having the two traditional front slash pockets (like the men's version has) for quickly stashing items & because I like to put my hands in my pockets. All in all, the good definitely outweighs the bad, but i hope that Backcountry makes some changes to the next version of these awesome pants!
so, i bought these - i went downhill skiing in them, and they were relatively okay - i fell a couple times, and didnt get wet. however, the trouble was that they were SUUUPER thin for skiing pants. i had to wear two layers underneath (one was fleece) and was still cold. they're thinner than jeans - just a light pant. i would not recommend them for snow sports for this reason only. also, they run a little short if you have longer legs. mine are long, not suuuuper long, but long. they gave me the same problem that all other regular/err-on-the-side-of-less-length pants do.
they have a great DWR on them, so backcountry skiing is great. in bounds, they may breathe too well! great for hiking, climbing, and backpacking, and adventure travel...
I am not into classic hiking pants, you know, the loose kind with 5+ pockets. The extra material in the legs and crotch area bugs me. I am a marathoner, cyclist, weight lifter, yoga girl who wears workout clothes that fit close to my skin. When I saw these I knew they'd be perfect for the Grand Canyon. I was able to wear a pair of silks, and thermals underneath them without feeling like a packed sausage. Without the extra layering they hugged me like loose tights. The pant legs can fold into capris, with a snap to hold them in place. The three pockets are enough for me since I usually carry a backpack to hike. I don't like things bouncing around on my legs.
I want another pair. Someone got smart in making a pair of pants for those of us who like tights and pants that fit. I am a size 2 and smalls fit me perfectly! The material is stretchy and I washed them each night to find them completely dry in the morning. I wore them in 19 to 78 degree weather. No complaints.

I just read the label on my Backcountry.com Rime Jacket, which is made of Polartec Power Shield like these pants.
What is says about Polartec Power Shield: - Extremely Abrasion Resistant - Blocks 98% of the wind - Water Repellant - Highly Breathable - Stretch for active comfort - Less noise than a hardshell - warmth w/o weight - Machine Washable
These will be SLIGHTLY wind resistant, moreso than your average fleece, but not nearly to the level of a true softshell. The "Hardface, makes the outer surface of the fleece smooth, and helps a bit to cut the wind as compared to a normal fleece, but it is still very air permeable. Hope that helps.
I wear these pants everywhere now, on a cold chilly day in SF riding a motorcycle, to the gym, rock climbing, lounging around the house... which is surprising because I was going to send these pants back. They seemed too warm for everyday use but too cold for winter use, seems now that they are just right for everything.
The fabric is a stretchy, abrasion resistant, stain resistant, wind resistant, sturdy but soft polyester-like dark brown. They don't look too sporty, and they go from gym to lunch easily. The picture makes them look like a wide leg, but the fit is more classic straight leg with a slight bootcut.
As to sizing, I usually wear a 6 in Banana, and Prana, but I got the medium and they are form fitting. (28 waist, 37 hips)
There are also two areas you can snap it, so if you are not rolling them up you can snap the loop higher so it is hidden under a pocket of fabric and doesn't look like its just some random piece hanging out.
I picked up a pair of these for my wife and now she wants some more! They are holding up extremely well, they are water-resistant but not when you're hiking through rain covered vegetation....water soaks right through at that point. They fit true to size and don't fall down at all, like a lot of other pants tend to do. All in all a great product from a great company!
I am 5'9" and 145 lbs and the M fits me nicely, a little snug - which I like, because pants always stretch out and there's not much more annoying than always pullin up yo drawars while trying to hike/climb, IMHO. Hope that helps...(FYI
These are fantastic. I'm 5'10, 160 and I usually take anywhere from an 8-10 in pants because of my wide hips. I got the large in these and loved them as soon as I tried them on. The inside of the material has a softness to it, similar to the texture of patagonia's capeline 4 material which is my favorite part of the pant, because my experience with other shell pants is that they feel cold on your legs during the winter if you're not wearing a baselayer under them due to their thinness. Their fit is perfect and are not too tight nor too loose. Length is good too, as I usually wear a tall in pants and they lay perfectly.
I Got a pair from my boyfriend as a gift. I didn't think they would be as worm as they are, and this is comparing them to my Carhartts, but they are. They are so comfortable and move with you in very way. I would say they are 95% wind proof. I loved them so much that I had to order another pair. I ordered the XS and they fit pretty good, 5' and 100lbs
These run really REALLY small. I'm 5'5" and 113 and generally wear a 00 from J.Crew, usually a solid 0 or 2 from other places but couldn't even get the XS's over my hips. And then I spaced and missed my 30 day SAC return window so I have a pair of climbing pants I'd love to use, but can't. :-(
I ordered a women's large in these pants, influenced by the lovely things that my male roommate proclaimed about the men's softshell pant from Backcountry.com, thinking that perhaps the picture was showing a smaller size. I found that the "Loose 3-D ergonomic fit" was a little less loose about my muscular biking legs than I would have liked. I could feasibly have kept them, but prefer less constriction for climbing and biking. If you like your pants pretty contoured and have legs on the slimmer side, I'd recommend you check these out. I do think the pockets on the side are a bit weird though, like strange pouches. The fabric and utility seem awesome, and I would enjoy a looser cut if backcountry.com made another version of these pants.
Really cute, almost too tight. (I am 5'3" and 120 lbs, normally wear a sz 4). However the color is definitely not black, and not brown. Kind of odd shade that I decided would be hard to match with anything so I returned them
