Backcountry.com made the Women’s Luft 800 Down Sweater with high-loft fill and an ultralight shell to keep its weight down and help you stay warm on all your adventures. You’ll hardly notice the 12oz weight when you’re hiking, climbing, or skiing, but you’ll sure be stoked on the warm 800-fill down insulation. The crew at Backcountry.com understands how much of a hassle it can be to require a closet full of puffies, so they made this down sweater versatile enough to wear as a layering piece or a belay jacket.
Bottom Line: Put your fleece in the closet and leave it there.
The perfect down jacket & layer for a woman on the move. Awesome feminine cut and love the guacomole color, bright and smooth zippers, inner upper pocket,2 zip hand pockets, great stitching and light shell material, and extremely warm. It is true to size so does not fit a lot of extra underneath but functions well as a very warm outer layer and/or under a shell. This jacket functions very much as a "sweater" and gives you all the bang for your buck while serving many needs. Great for skiing, hiking, climbing, and very packable as a back-up layer. A great versatile product for your outdoor clothing arsenal. I'm 5'8 and wear a medium.
I loved the color (guacomole) and the fit. I'm 6' with long arms and the sleeves fit! It was form fitting and flattering. However, after a month of occasional use, the zipper came off. I think it was due to the zipper being less hefty due to the lightwieghtness of the jacket. Wish it had a beefier zipper!
No it's not treated to be water proof, but the material is slightly water resistant. I wore it out in the Black Hills when it was misty out, and it did just fine. I'd hesitate to try it in a shower or gentle rain though.

After reading all the reviews about sizing I ordered L in gray color. (I'm 5ft6in and 140lb) way too big in the upper body. yes, hips are snug, but not too tight. Tried it on one camping trip and it works great after a rain shell (but be careful - the jacket it not super short, so make sure the shell is longer). Later I ordered teaberry color in M. I must say - it fits much better. the hip width is pretty much the same as L, but overall fit is much better. I put the two sized together and the only difference was maybe an inch width in the chest area. Sleeves are very long for both sizes (which is not bad for warming up your hands inside them), and I have normal length arms. Teaberry color is very cute. Bright, but cute.
The down fill rating is 800. That means that 1 oz. of this down will take up 800 cubic inches of space in a controlled test. This is a relatively high fill rating, and thus this down has a relatively high warmth to weight ratio.
After reading all the reviews I got L (I'm 5'6 with 39inch hip and 36inch chest). I'm pretty much swimming in L on the top, but it's nice and snug in the hip... will probably do great with a layer under it, but I was hoping to use it with just microweight smartwool shirt under. The fill is very soft and comfy and it packs small, will try it on backpacking trip this in 2 days. Want to try M, but now the price went up again...
This jacket is wonderfully cut if you're tall and slim(ish?) - I'm 5'11"/135lbs and the medium *just* fits - no sweaters under this jacket for me, which is fine since I wanted this as a slim medium warm layer under a shell. If you wear a C cup or larger, and have a "normal"-sized rib cage (I guess I'm saying if you're not petite), this cut may not work for you. I wear a mid-B cup, and if I was any larger, the medium wouldn't fit. (I did try on the large, and the arms are sooooo long you may just want to look elsewhere if the medium doesn't fit. I also have the Patagonia Upside of Down jacket, and it's a more generous feminine cut. It's a thicker down jacket as well, but not too puffy by any means.)For me, being the sasquatch that I am, the Luft's medium-sized arm length is perfectly long, and the back has ample coverage as well. The photos above depict the cut of the jacket pretty accurately. The carbon color, on my computer at least, looks a little green-grey, but it's really a very neutral light grey with a subtle golden thread interwoven with the grey.An inside pocket is nice to have, and the slightly gathered cuffs are softened by ribbed cotton on the palm side. As Martha would say, "It's a good thing." Ideally, I'd like a two-way zipper, but it's a minor complaint.(and shhhhh: I found this jacket on geartrade for a steal. You may want to check there too if you don't mind not being able to return it.)
Was hoping this would be my best answer for an affordable down sweater--all the warmth without the bulk. As an avid skier, I was looking for the best midweight layer money could buy. Unfortunately I was disappointed when I could hardly bend over with the small zipped. I am 5 ft tall 115 lbs, 28 in waist. The medium fit better in the waist but was too long in the sleeves and back length--it stuck out from my North Face jacket. Now I may be dropping the big bucks on the Patagonia sweater or the North Face down sweater. Lucky you if this fits! You are probably tall and skinny....
Scored with the lady on this one. She lufts it. The guacamole and maroon interior are very complimentary. And the tapered fit works great under her Marmot shell. She's 5'7" and I went with the medium. Now maybe we can leave a few layers behind on our fall and winter outings. It may not be warm enough for standing around in freezing temperatures but it's a fantastic layering addition and very light and packable. The hips do flair out a bit so it looks a bit funny when it isn't zipped up. Easy fix there though.
I am 5'1" and wears Small in North Face Thunder or Xsmall in Patagonia Down Sweater, tried on the Medium and found the waist is snug while my hands disappear in the sleeves. I think this jacket is designed for tall and skinny people with long arms. The color - Carbon is a light grey and not as dark as shown.
I absolutely adore this jacket. Can't wait for the cold weather just to see how long I can get away with wearing something so light in Chicago. It's super light-weight and compressible... took it on a trip to Peru for the evenings in the mountains and wished it were colder so I could wear it more.I am about 5'7" and 135 lbs--fairly slim with long arms--a medium fit me perfectly. Many times sleeves run short and these were great. It's not bulky and is flattering to a woman's curves. The Carbon color is definitely not black--it's like a graphite gray with more of an orange than red interior. Great detail. I'd buy another just for fun (if on sale again). Recommend it and enjoy!
I need a down sweater for an Alaska backpacking trip I'm doing this summer. It needs to fit over a couple layers. I tried on the Patagonia down sweater size S and while the arms fit perfect the length of the jacket was awkwardly short. How does this jacket compare? I'm 5'9" and 125 lb, usually wear a S. What size would you recommend? Would the body/sleeves of the jacket be long enough?
I'm 5'9", 140 lbs, 32DD. I bought a medium. The sleeves are perfect, and it is cut to be a bit longer in the back, so it's not super-short. I think you'd probably be okay with a small if you don't want to wear much under it.
I am 5' 8" and 150 lbs. I got the medium, which fits great. The sleeves come down past my wrists and to the start of my thumbs. For layering underneath, I might suggest a medium, as mine tightens up quite a bit on my bust (34D), but other than that, two layers underneath, provided they're not bulky, would work just fine. oh, and it's ridicuously comfy!
I purchased the BC Luft Down Sweater specifically for an eight night trans-sierra backpack trip in Sept. Weight, of course, is always the issue and I wasn't disappointed. This and a Gore-Tex shell were all I brought for layers. I never once got cold. This jacket is toasty warm, comfortable and soft. It just feels great. I love the way it fits. It moves so well with you. I'm average size, 5'6" and slender and I bought a medium. I read where one reviewer was disappointed with the sleeves that they were stretched out when they got it. I feel the way the sleeves are designed is a plus. I really hate sleeves that grab my wrists tight and bunch around my gloves. These sleeves fit over gloves very nicely. I'm not a flashy girl, but I went out on a limb and bought the teaberry color. It's bright and looks really sharp. When I returned from my trip I brought the jacket to work and two of my co-workers who are my height and also slender tried it on and really loved it, but for one draw back. They are both really busty ladies and the medium didn't fit around their chest. The fit is feminine and flattering, though. If you are big-busted, you may want to go up a size.
The only unfortunate thing, nobody's fault I believe, is somehow I got a hole in the sleeve right above the cuff. I don't when or how it happend, but feathers were coming out all over. So when I got back I contacted BC to exchange it and I explained the situation and, as usual, they were fabulous about returning it and another one is on its way. The affordability makes this a five-star beauty.
of all the reviews i have read, I appreciate description on the bust as that makes a huge difference! Thank you. Very helpful. I am concerned about the sleeve issue as I am only 5 2, but going to give it a try.
Zi, The fabric is very soft and slick for a man-made material. I have the carbon, and it has a golden thread interwoven with the grey that is very subtle - it gives the fabric a light sheen. It's really beautiful and feels very luxurious.
This jacket was certainly a steal. It's a very affordable 800 down. It fits well and is flattering. My complaints are: it's cheaply made. The wrists are jersey knit material that seemed streched out when I got it. The pockets are lined with a rough nylon material that catches on things. All in all - I'm sure it performs well, but the quality is lacking. Luckily, the crummy parts of the jacket are too visible.
This is my favorite jacket [and I have many] because it fits great, I am 5'10" and 145 lbs. The sleeves are long and the fit is very flattering. It is light weight and warm and so easy to throw on over anything. Packs down very small for travelling, and is great to wear under a shell if it is very cold.

Out with the puffy, great jacket that looks great, its really warm, somewhat compressible, the way the panels are stitched helps the jacket to have a nice fitting close to the body, good length, really warm, a must in a few words, got the red one
The "teaberry" - is this more orange red, like dark "salmon" than red?The fit - can someone provide me with the finished jacket measurements for size "small" - shoulder width, waist, sleeves length and back length.Thanks.
Just got this jacket in the mail today and I love how it fits! The sleeves and the body of the jacket are long, which I like...I'm 5'8", 135 lbs and I ordered a medium. Fits perfectly!
The fabric and construction of this jacket are superior. The stitching pattern for the baffles looked a bit strange at first, but I think that's what contributes to this garment's fit & movement. The jacket fabric feels sooo soft & smooth.
I was a bit surprised by how thin it is, but I suspect it's pretty warm anyway. I haven't worn it outside to fully test it, because I probably have to return it due to the size.
I was right on the border of XS and S according to the size chart, and went with the S. The jacket fits *perfectly* everywhere except the armscye, where it's just a bit too tight & binds. The sleeves are a bit longer than average, which to me makes them perfect - no gap between sleeve & glove. I'm hesitant to exchange it for a M, because I suspect I'll be swimming in it, but I can't wear the S.
Am M/L in snowboarding gear. My Arc-teryx softshell is a L. If something runs small, L usually works, but from the reviews, this jacket seems *exceptionally* small. Am 5"10 - the longer sleeves, lightweight and insulation sound great. Should I go XL in this case?
Pros: It is warm. I love the color - the teaberry is not as bright as I feared. It is soft and light. The Napolean pocket is nice, too! Cons: Sizing is off. I am 5'5" and normally wear a Medium/size 10 top. I read the reviews and so I ordered a Large. I will definitely be able to layer under this, but I think the Medium would have been okay. The sleeves on the Large are too long, and loose for me, but I can fix / live with that. Fluffier than the Marmot Venus that I had ordered before I found this one - I am sending the Marmot back and keeping this one for my upcoming Montana Ski vacation. All in all, worth the ~$65 I paid!
Hi. I usually buy a small. However, your sizing chart for shirts and jackets suggest that I should order a medium. I will probably want to wear this with a turtleneck or light sweater and do not wan the jacket to be tight but also not very roomy. Do you have garment dimensions for chest, waist and hip rather than the average dimensions on your chart?
Follow the sizing chart. This jacket runs a little small anyway and if you are trying to layer under it, the small is going to be VERY tight if you are not the right measurements for it.
Bought as a surprise for my wife as she needed something to handle the beginning of the cold season in the Midwest. Functions extremely well (so far no temps below 0) for as light as it is. As mentioned, the cut is extraordinary, however I would definitely suggest sizing as normal instead of sizing up (as another reviewer suggested) because by not letting the Sweater hug your body, you lose the appeal and intention of the fit. No feathers showing through the red exterior, construction looks solid.
I have long arms and wide shoulders, which can make it difficult to find jackets that fit. There's nothing worse than cold air seeping in around your wrists or not being able to lift your arms. The length of the arms are even a bit too long for me (I'm 5'9" and 140 lbs, bought the L) but I like how that keeps my hands warmer. I probably could have fit in the M if they had it, but am just as pleased with the L. It's still a flattering fit and lets me layer underneath a little easier.
Love the teaberry color. I wish more winter jackets came in warm colors. Not all of us look good in jewel tones. The fabric even pretty decent at repelling water. My only complaint is that it leaks a fair bit of down.
Got this for my lady friend. She had wanted a down sweater type jacket for awhile. She is 5'8" and the medium fit her like a charm. She likes the Teaberry color and the fit better than the patagonia down sweater. She always is cold but with this piece of gear she stays warm. comfortable and functional.
This down sweater comes with me on all adventures from fall through spring. The jacket fits true to size, although the arms are a little long. It is long in the body. It compresses well and is light enough for throwing in the pack 'just in case'. I got the grey/pink and the pink is VERY hot pink - just be aware. I got a medium and I'm 5'4, 135 and it is perfect. The cut is flattering. I highly recommend it!
I bought this jacket based on the reviews - I am 5'9 145 lbs and the medium is too tight of a fit. Very snug at the hips. The sleeves are great. I usually have problems with them being too short. Very light weight buy very warm. I am sending the medium back to get a larger size.
I am going snow camping in a few weeks. I will be wearing wool long johns and shirt, perhaps another layer of smartwool with this jacket and a shell. is that enough? or should i layer a fleece somewhere in between? I have a MH monkey sweater i like very much. Another question is should i have the fleece on before the down or the other way around??thanks! don't wanna be cold!!
For going down town this jacket will do fine and is fashionable. Colors are a bit overdone. Functionally this jacket is limited as far as layering and the flare one the bottom is overexaggerated. For excellent choices on down jackets/sweaters check out Patagonia/ Mountain Hardwear etc. They pride themselves in functionality. Sleeves are long but OK if you are 5'110' or taller.
I'm very interested in this down sweater but have never tried on a Luft jacket before so am unsure of the fit. I am pretty tall and somewhat slender (5'10", 140 lbs). I normally wear a medium but hate it when a jacket is at all constricting. A couple of comments here advise to go a size up but I also don't want to swim in a large. Anyone have any advice as to what size would be best for me?
I ordered this to replace a north face 800 fill jacket that I have worn to pieces. The Luft is custom made for my body type, is snug in all the right places and roomy where I need it to be. I an 5"7' and about 135 with broad shoulders and a small waist. Long sleeve length helps avoid the dreaded cold wrist. I have already washed it and it emerged from the dryer good as new. The Backcountry brand is a great value and attractive to boot. Highly recommend this jacket as an everyday item that provides warmth, comfort and stylishness without a steep price. Only down side is knit material at the wrists might stretch out at some point but I am hopeful it won't...
I read some reviews before ordering, so I ordered a medium instead of small, which is what I usually order. I'm 5'5", 130 lbs with larger shoulders and an athletic build, and the medium fits me perfectly. The jacket is really warm, and I'm very pleased with the quality.
it is very warm! 800 fill down provides great insulation, with low weight, and you should be good to zero. you can even layer with this under another larger parka or shell, and you would be set for below zero temps. check out the picture below, this weather is like 7 degrees, and 20 mph ridge top winds.
I just got my luft 800 and I love it! I was surprised that the inside lining was maroon, it looks brown on my computer and there is no close up shot. It's fine though, I just wasn't expecting it. I'm 5'5", 120 lbs and it fits great, but the sleeves are just a *tiny* bit too long, which surprised me because most sleeves are too short for me. It's really form-fitting and not puffy at all.
I got the guacamole and I was surprised the lining was maroon, it looks brown on my computer, but it's cute anyway. I'm 5'5" and 120 lbs and got a S and it fits great except the sleeves are a tiny bit too long. Otherwise it's great and looks like it will be durable, also it's very packable.
The main difference is that the sweater built as more of a sweater. With all of the stitching it moves with you much, much more. The jacket is more of a an outer layer which moves well but doesn't stick with you quite as much as the sweater. Either way you'll love them. These are a couple of great products!
The perfect down jacket for skinny tall girls. Sleeves are too long and it is tight on hips. I ordered L and XL sizes. Xl size is the same on a bottom as a large and huge on shoulders. I will return it.
This down sweater did its job, and was a super deal (less than half the original price). I took it up Mt. Shasta, mainly using it when we would stop for breaks, and I certainly was not cold. The fit is not quite what I had hoped (baggy around the middle), but I will probably have it under a shell in the future anyway.
Is the guacamole color as bright as it looks on-line? I definitely prefer color to neutrals, but I'm afraid this color is nearly fluorescent and won't be flattering.
I am in love with lightweight down. . . . that being said, this jacket will do the job. However, as far as aesthetics go - it's not the most appealing or flattering jacket. I have the grey color - which makes the person wearing it look kind of like the michelian man. The color is flat and drab. It's cut is semi-flattering, but still a bit too boxy. I ordered the medium, b/c so many reviewers said that it has an "athletic cut," . . . . i border on small/medium all the time - so I ordered a medium. Wrong idea. It runs big. And the arms are long - which worked for me - (5' 7''). All in all, this is a practical jacket - I will use it for function, not fashion.
Pros: Curved baffles define your curves, long, sexy cut for a down piece, warm for the weight, and you can't beat the price! Green color is prettier than pictured, but still pretty bright. Cons: The sizing on this is definitely on the slim side. I am 5'8", size 8, ordered a large, and the sweater is quite snug on my narrow hips. The waist fits well, but the bust is too tight for 36D, so I'm sending it back. I also agree with the reviewer who said that the cuffs seem stretched out.
would this jacket be good for someone with a short body 5'4" a weight problem 170 bigger than average butt and a great life that wants to take her small dogs snowshoeing in the woods about a block away? I was talking to Heather last night when my I-Touch died SORRY Joan
Great down jacket & layer, I bought it in carbon, and got lots of complements. Flattering feminine cut, excellent quality all around, very warm and not bulky at all. In fact, it looks so good, that I wear it in the city as my main jacket, and have not yet worn it skiing. I am 5' and 115 lbs, got medium and can fit a sweater underneath. Wear sleeves rolled up wigh the red lining showing, very pretty look.
The hubby bought this for Mother's Day in Carbon. 6'0" and size 10 and the XL fit with plenty of room. Wouldn't go any smaller as it's pretty tailored in the hips but length in arms and torso are amazing. Sooooo soft inside and out as well. Love it and am ordering another in a second color. Also ordered one for my sister-in-law who is built the same. Can't wait for Fall!
Fits nicely; sleeves are just right for winter apparel; paired with a light weight knit top, I have been out in -20 and kept warm. I contemplated getting a medium but very happy I settled on small; fits snugly without constriction; very comfortable.
This is my first down coat and I am very pleased. It's not the warmest coat you can buy, but combined with an outer wind-breaking layer, it does the job. It's definitely a "cool" coat and it's nice to go to bright colors for a change. I haven't noticed many feathers escaping (but yes, some do escape) and it's staying clean even though I wear it out to rock climbing areas and it falls on the ground. Overall, it's a great purchase.
I'm on the smaller side, 5'2" and about 110 and I have tried half a dozen or so down jackets. They are always too big in the waist in too small in the hips. Thank you backcountry for creating a women's jacket that actally fits women! The arms are long, like others have said, but that just means my hands will stay warm. This jacket also has a higher fill weight(7-9 oz) than many of the bigger brands. The material in the pockets is a little scratchy, but considering the price, fit, and warmth, that's hardly worth complaining about.
I loved the look, the price, the color, and the feel of the fabric. I'm not overweight and I have long arms. This jacket was made for long arms and that's about it. I'm 5 foot 9 inches and I weigh about 132. Despite the flare at the hips you need to be a stick without hips to wear the jacket. I ordered a medium which did fit. The jacket is seriously fitted to your shape. The arm holes on the body are very close to your arm pit and feel constricting. It just fit and would never have allowed for anything more than a thin shirt let alone wearing a sweater. The sleeves were great, but I would never have been comfortable in this jacket. I didn't reorder a large. I just didn't love the style enough to want to.
Cute fit. It does have a more "feminine" fit to it, but without having those awkward huge hip forms. I was looking for something a little less bulky that would still keep me warm in Pacific Northwest weather and this has been great so far. I am 5'5" and 130 and small fits me well. I have long arms and the sleeves are plenty long, too. The gray color is cute...lots of compliments on it.
I really like the way this jacket looks on my wife, very flattering. Sexy cut. It was a great hit as a present. She opted for one size larger than usual.
I have looked for two years for a reasonably priced, not too bulky, puffer and I finally found it! I have tried other brands and they just make me look like a marshmallow, but this one has a perfect form fit and is super light weight. It's great for around town and for shoveling the driveway! The only thing I could ask for is elastic in the wrist cuffs, but it's not that big of a deal. Overall a fantastic coat!
I just moved to a much colder area than where Im from. I hadnt ever heard of a down insulated jacket. Everyone told me I needed to get one because I was always complaining of being cold. I finally ended up with this one and I love it!!! You wouldnt believe how warm this tiny thing could be. It has a perfect cut as many have mentioned (Im 57 125lbs and got the small), the sleeves are slightly longer than youd expect but personally I think its a great length. I purchased the grey jacket and the inside is a true red, not the orange that appears in the picture.
I love this coat. I was really surprised that it fit so well. I ordered the medium and I have really wide shoulders and it fits me perfect. It's not heavy enough for a really cold day outside or on the mountain but perfect for running around and doing errands and I plan to do some spring skiing in it. Love the color too, Grey goes with everything and the red on the inside and the collar gives the coat a nice little touch of color.
I love this coat and wish it came in some more choices of color.i ordered two different sizes thinking it would be tight, but it is true to size. Bc gladly sent me a ups label to send the other back free of charge. Very stylish and fitting. Great design as a down coat goes.
This jacket fits well, but, as others have said, order a size up. You will not be sorry. It will still look tremendous and you will actually be able to move. very warm. I plan to sleep in it in the winter hikes. I also wear around town, it is luxury in my town, where frumpy is the order of the day.
Very cute coat, but runs small. I wear a large, with room to spare in North Face, but I couldn't zip a large in this coat past my chest! The sleeves are a great length! Order the next size up from what you usually wear.
Perfect layering piece if you don't want to look puffy (I'm puffy enough on my own, thank you very much). I wear it under an admittedly tight medium North Face 'Grace' rain shell (I'm 5'7", 170 pounds) and it is keeping me warm enough in 30-40 degree wet Seattle weather to warrant no extra layers. I was actually sweating when it was over 40 degrees. A hood would be nice, but you can't have everything for such a great price.
This sweater is one of the best constructed of its kind. Definitely competes with other jackets I have owned that are from other, more known brands. The fit is very feminine and the "puff" is not existent, especially for an 800-fill. I purchased it as a layering piece for under my hard shell (keeps me extremely toasty) but now find myself wearing it around town, too. It is absolutely one of the most practical, versatile and fashionable pieces I own.
I have worn this jacket in Vancouver, BC and freezing temps in Utah and it does just as well if not better than my 600 down TNF jacket (which is heavier and bulkier). I got this one to downsize and I am not disappointed. It is so lightweight but so warm. The cut is flattering, I have had several people compliment it and ask where I got it. The sleeve length is great, a little past my wrists. I got a M and I am 5'5 and 130lbs. and it fits just right. It packs really well too, compresses well. Paired with my Ibex base layer I am doubly warm. I highly recommend the Backcountry.com Down Sweater!!
This jacket rocks! The fit is perfect...longer sleeves and the length in the body is long enough as well! I wore it skiing under a hardshell the other day when it was freezing and windy outside....perfect combo! I've also been wearing it around town and it's surprisingly wind resistant...on a cold, windy day at the dog park I felt warmer than people in much bulkier clothing looked!
I bought this as a christmas present for my girlfriend, and it garnered rave reviews from her and her family (phew!). It keeps her warm, and she's almost always cold. I think there have only been a couple of days this winter that she hasn't worn it. Comfortable down to around 10 degrees I would guess, then just throw a shell over it and you're golden!
The perfect down jacket & layer for a woman on the move. Awesome feminine cut and love the guacomole color, bright and smooth zippers, inner upper more...
I loved the color (guacomole) and the fit. I'm 6' with long arms and the sleeves fit! It was form fitting and flattering. However, after a month more...
