Fill the single-wall Backcountry.com Chalice Stainless Steel Bottle with your favorite refresher, screw on the plastic, lid tight, and get to your business—minus spill paranoia. This electrolyte charged and dolomitic sand blasted stainless steel vessel won’t carry the flavor of last night’s celebratory beverage, and the food-grade polypropylene rim keeps you from ending up stuck to the Chalice when the temps drop. The Chalice’s wide-mouth lid threading fits most water filters.
Its a good size, and stainless steel is where it's at. BUT, after about 2 months, the plastic rim started spinning with the cap, and now it won't come off. I have another non backcountry branded bottle of the same manufacturer and it is still holding up ok.
Great water bottle so far... its size is decent and having it be stainless steel is great.... It is holding up great even with a few drops already. Great, cheap water bottle!
Two questions: 1)It's not the 18/8 steel that's got me worried about flavor remembrances, it's the polypropylene-- does the top part get da funk? How much more likely is that part to grow microbial friendlies than the rest of the bottle?
2)I assume this is compatible with the Katadyn Hiker water filter, but I'd hate to assume too much. Anyone know for sure?
The top part has been fine. Although PP, it's been quite durable and if it's kept clean it won't get any of da funk. It will be most common to find bacteria in the seam between the plastic threaded top and the metal of the bottle itself, as there will always be small openings and cracks. That's easily remedied with a good hot water washout every so often. I'll do mine maybe once a week, some people will recommend every day. The only trouble I've had with this bottle is that in fairly cold weather (sub 20F) the flat o-ring inside the cover will stick to the threaded half, but that could be taken care of with a small amount of glue. Overall it is sturdy and has a very solid feel, it also insulates beverages fairly well.
With regard to the Katadyn filter, I have no idea.

This is round two for the Chalice. First one I had lasted for a year then I dropped it while running and the plastic insert cracked. Up until that point though I had really liked the bottle and for the price (when on sale) you can't beat it.
Great bottle for hiking. Top has screwed on tight so far. On the inside of the lid is a rubber seal preventing leakage. It holds a hefty amount of water and does not feel bulky. Stainless Steel all the way.
This bottle is great! Truly does not get skunky for a while...I mean weeks possibly months. I don't keep the greatest track of time.
Simple: the design is clean and straightforward without all a bunch of curlicued patterns and whatnot.
Functional: the loop on the cap is a great size. Not to big that it gets in the way but not so small that you can easily attach/detach a carabiner or grab hold of it. The lip of the bottle is lined in BPA free plastic to keep your mouth from sticking to the bottle when temperatures drop.
Easy to identify: brightly colored cap (I have the green) and the awesome Backcounty logo.
Good size: holds a good amount of water without being too big.
The bottle seems nice enough - I haven't had a chance to use it as of yet. I literally just received the shipment and had to comment. The packing was not good. When I received the box, you could hear the bottles hitting each other. Obviously, when I opened up the box, they were all scratched up from beating around on each other while in the box. There was one air bag in the box which did no good. They really need to pacakge these bottles better when shipping. I know eventually the bottles will get scratched, but didn't expect them to look like they have been used when I recieved them.
I ordered two before the holidays, and they were similarly packaged, and had small dents. I think BackCountry has taken these comments into consideration, because I ordered two more a couple of weeks ago, and they arrived with much better packing and dent-free.
yea, just got three of these in myself, the white one is scratched up and the other two dented. my package had no protective packaging whatsoever, and all three of the mouths seem a little off; but hey, the price is right.
It's hard to find fault in a product that does exactly what it is supposed to do: "hold water". Relative light. Seals well, I've only had it 1 month. Large opening so you can put ice in it, which is a plus. Additionally it's cheaper than most steel H20 bottles on the market. It does take a few washing to get the initial funky taste to go away.
I recently bought three of these on sale for 9.99. Seems like a great deal except for two of them have an oblong shape on top where the threads are. This makes for difficult times when screwing down and leakage. Not well constructed in the most important part.
I love these. We now own four. The wide mouth makes it easier to clean than most water bottles, and the lids are easy to mark with permanent marker. The *only* drawback I've discovered is that, because they are wider water bottles, they don't fit as well in the side pocket of the kids' backpacks... so if you're looking for something to replace plastic water bottles, you may want to browse the site for something a little more tall and narrow. On the other hand, the lids on these create a nice, tight seal, so I don't worry about them leaking in the bottom of the kids' bookbags.
I got this for my husband for christmas and he loves it. It is a good size for keeping at his desk at work, as well as around the house. It hasn't seen much action beyond that yet, but we're lovin' it so far.
Needed to replace some old BPA-filled Nalgenes so go two of these for free with my FB coupon! Got them in two days, sweet. Other reviews said the paint on the bottles scratches so I picked the plain metal ones with blue and green tops, no issues and the plastic tops/threads work just fine. Happy that I can carabiner them to my pack for BPing trips too. I washed it once and don't notice any bad tastes either.
I took it up to the mountains in Fort Irwin CA. It went to the top of Mt. Tiefort a couple of times and survived. It got a couple of dings but it held its own and the water which is what it is supposed to do. I recommend it to anyone due to its great price and durability.
I bought 6 of these. The first time they arrived, they were in a big box, just thrown in. Needless to say, they were all banged up, dented, scratched, etc. I called backcountry and they sent a new order out to me with next day shipping. They even refunded me the 6 bucks I paid for 2 day shipping.
The bottles themselves work great. No problems with oblong screws or anything strange like that. There is a silicon gasket to keeps the bottle sealed pretty tight. My one complaint is that these get banged up pretty easily. The painted ones chip and look like they can get pretty ugly if not treated right. This isnt a problem for me, so i'm keeping it.
GOod size, easy to drink mouth too! But remember, no machine wash. It will probably melt the top and make it unusable.
These are great vintage watter bottles. I love the metalic feel and durability and I thought the plastic areas might get gnasty but to date no issues. For these prices just go ahead and add 5 to the cart.
cant beat these for the price - $6 each. with that said, one came damaged, the o-ring was falling out and i was unable to get it back in. backcountry made it right by shipping me a new one.
These bottles aren't as cool as they sound. I thought it would be on par with Sigg but it's not even close. The paint is thin and looks cheap. I had to return the bottles because they came dented and scratched up. Save your pennies and get a Sigg bottle.
To hell with Sigg, go with Klean Kanteen. I've had the Backcountry brand Klean Kanteen for over a year now and it's freaking burly. The powdercoat is impossible to chip off, it holds a ton, and it doesn't dent. Siggs are aluminum and dent too easily, Klean Kanteens are stainless steel and much more durable. Plus you don't have to break your finger off every time you open it.
Great for the price! This doesn't have fancy flip-top lid so it's not great for trip to use while driving, but it's a good, solid bottle with lots of uses.
I use this bottle as a spare bottle in my car. I usually fill it with water or water+a nuun hydration tablet. The only issue is that its not insulated so it gets hot with hot things and freezes when I leave it in my car. Note that I've left it in my car full of water and it froze overnight but did not break which is an awesome feature to have. The space leftover was enough that the pressure didn't break it.
As some reviews said, this bottle might be a bit of a pain to open while driving, but other than that I love it, I got the Blue/Blue combination and it looks sick! Would def buy another one.
Its a good size, and stainless steel is where it's at. BUT, after about 2 months, the plastic rim started spinning with the cap, and now it won't more...
Great water bottle so far... its size is decent and having it be stainless steel is great.... It is holding up great even with a few drops already. Great, more...
