The third piece of the essential avalanche kit, a probe is as vital as boots and skis every time you head into the backcountry. Backcountry.com has teamed up with the avalanche safety gurus at G3 to offer the goat-friendly 240 Probe, which uses a single-pull deployment system and dependable 7001 aluminum shaft to ensure quick assembly and reliable strength, with a small goat design to separate your probe from the pack. It's marked every 5mm for easy pit measurements, and has a pointed cone tip for easy probing in rock-solid avalanche debris.

Bodies are soft

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Probes shouldn't be. Make sure to practice and test probe before backcountry use (like you should with any gear). This probe is light and fast to get into action but the locking action is a little finicky at first use. Once you got a hang of it it is easy to deploy. It can look like it is locked but won't be unless the mechanism is truly engaged. Others in my posse had trouble with disengagement. This probe was fast and smooth to take down. For new users, get rid of the bag (unless for storing at home) so you can access it fast from your pack. Should be the first thing you see / grab at the mouth of your pack.

Great Probe but too long when collapsed

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

This probe is as good as any other I've used. Seriously, just as good as my friend's $90 probe (though heavier by a gram or two, whatever...). Anyway, it's a great buy - the drawback though is that it is super long when collapsed. 20 inches. I carry a 30L snowdrifter pack and it won't even fit diagonally let alone in its assigned holder spot. So if you've got the room in your pack, totally go for it.

Gets The Job done

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Great length, I rarely will need anything longer than this. It weighs next to nothing and fits great in my pack. Easy, consistent setup mechanism. Overall, a trustworthy and crucial piece of equipment.
And who doesn't love reppin' the Goat?

A Good Buy!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This probe is awesome. It's the perfect size and doesn't weigh a ton. It packs down small and it seems very durable. I gave it a 4 out of 5 stars because I am not that crazy about the locking mechanism at the top. I think this is a great probe and will do its job with no problem. With that being said, if you spend a little bit more you can get a probe with a better locking mechanism.

Nice G3 and Backcountry collaboration

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Overall a nice probe. The aluminum construction feels durable, it snaps together very quickly with a single pull and comes with a blue goat storage bag. For the price it's just as good as any other aluminum probe out there.

Goat Probe

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Great backcountry probe. This is a tool everyone needs in the backcountry. This probe is easy to use and deploys with a single pull of a cord and locks in place easily. I've only used it a couple times but seems durable. And it has a Goat on it so thats a plus.

Great probe!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I used it for a couple of drills this winter in Bariloche and it performed flawlessly! Nevertheless, I noticed that the rubber/plastic coating on the cable is starting to rip off after maybe only 10 deployments! It shouldn't be a problem, though, as it seems to be more aesthetic than anything...

Probe it out!

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I bought as a gift for a friend that is getting into touring and backcountry riding. It is an essential tool in the backcountry as it helps save lives. This probe is super easy to use - all it takes is a single pull from the handle to pull the probe together. It is extremely reliable and durable. As mentioned in the description, it is marked every 5mm for accurate reading and can easily penetrate the snow with the pointed cone tip.

Easy to use

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I hope I never have to get poled by it, but....

I really like single-pull design - it makes a lot of sense when time is essential, fingers are cold, and everything is jammed up with snow. This is a great probe, and the goat makes it even cooler. Don't go into the backcountry without it!
