With one of the lightest aluminum shovels and a stowable probe, the Backcountry Access Tour Shovel System saves space in your pack and gives you ultralight peace of mind. The Tour's easy-to-hold oval shaft and T-grip handle make working with a gloved hand easy. The Tour Shovel System stows a 6-foot probe inside the shovel shaft for an amazing, compact package. The strong, 6061-series aluminum blade powers through set-up snow and ice like a hot knife through butter. *Available in fixed and standard lengths

Get a real probe

The shovel is adequate and of high quality construction. As for the probe, it is way too short for actual use.

Why I sent this back

By:
July 24, 2007

Although this shovel and probe combo seems like a good deal, I decided to return it because the probe was too short (only about 180cm) and flimsy. It was recommended to me that the probe should be at least 300cm and sturdier than this one which has to be flimsier so it can fit in the shovel handle.

Light but pretty useless

By:

The system is light, but pretty much useless for building a snowcave or, more importantly, saving a buddy in an avalanche.
The probe tension cable snapped after the second assembly (which BTW takes a while to assemble) and we will see if BCA warranties it. I have been happy with the BCA Stash rider pack and would have expected the same quality in their other gear.

Nice and compact

Nice bit of lightweight compact kit for the vacation skier, if I was on the backside of the mountain everyday I'd probably want a longer probe and bigger shovel. For me this is a good compromise for my needs (side country skiing).

know that the probe isn't like super high quality, but at least its something. Shovel is very durable and light so if your looking for a sweet combo, go for it! I like that its fixed because i do snow caves.
