    Fastest is fastest.

The Backcountry Access Stealth 270 Probe features a quick-deploying mechanism to reduce fiddle time during beacon drills and rescue scenarios. BCA's Quick-Lock deployment lets you toss the probe in the air and simultaneously pull a notch to deploy the probe instantaneously, and the deployment tucks inside the first probe section to reduce space. Laser-etched depth markings assist with measuring snowpack depth and locating burial victims.

    Excellent Probe

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I am an AMGA certified ski guide and AIARE avalanche course instructor in Southwest Colorado. I have been using the BCA Stealth Carbon series of probes for several years. These are excellent probes and easily my favorite for day-in-day-out ski touring. The Stealth Carbon probe is very lightweight, the carbon construction gives it good rigidity, the centimeter markings allow it to be used for snow profile work, and the pull mechanism is incredibly effective. Of note, the pull mechanism consists of an additional section of pole so you get maximum length out of the probe and there is no dangling extension cable to deal with. Really nice. In addition, the flat rounded shape of the top piece is comfortable on my hand when I'm probing over terrain in a deep snowpack. Other probes without this feature leave my hand sore from pushing on the pointed top of the probe. All in all, this is a very well made, highly functional probe with a particularly effective extension design.

    Works When You Need It

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This probe has been a mainstay in my pack. It works. That's the bottom line when it comes to probes. It stows easily and when the time comes to deploy it, the locking mechanism works like a charm. My only hesitation is that I might upgrade to a 300 length out of respect for how deep a debris pile could end up being.
