Up your arsenal!
This is a great multipurpose shovel. If you are planning on using it for touring, make sure to give yourself time at home to learn how to properly adjust your shovel. It took me a few try's to get the hang of how to transform the shovel back and forth, but definitely worth the time! I found this shovel is great for digging pits and clearing snow.
I love this Hoe
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
I just got the Backcountry Access Dozer Hoe Shovel, and it is awesome. It has all the features of a normal avy shovel, large durable metal blade, extendable handle. It also has the ability to attach the shovel to the handle to form a hoe, which is great for moving a lot of snow fast. This thing is versatile and awesome!
Backcountry Access Dozer Hoe Shovel
I really didn't think the Hoe mode was going to make a difference with shoveling but after I used my buddy's Dozer I had to have one. You can move a lot more snow compared to a traditional shovel and its sweet for digging pits. You can sweep/drag the snow away in one motion, which conserves energy and moves snow more effectively.
Great addition to the arsenal
Great shovel; awesome hoe. Moves alot of snow quickly. Highly recommended. Set up/assembly and reconfigure very quick and intuitive. The second handle at the blade makes for ergonomic and efficient use. The time you save moving more snow more than makes up the few seconds it takes you to set up or convert. But with any tool used in life or death situations practice before you place yourself in an environment conducive to use.
I bet we see more of these hit the market.
Great for Sledding
- Gender: Male
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
I have not used this shovel to dig into an avalanche and hope I never have to. However, I have used it a few times this season to dig out my snowmobile when I got stuck. I got to say this thing is awesome for moving a lot of snow FAST with the hoe feature. The initial setup is quick in either orientation. I have found that it can kind of "stick" when switching between hoe and shovel and vice versa but not bad. I've had to chop into some pretty solid wind blown snow and the hoe worked really well for this. I would highly recommend this for snowmobilers for digging out.
Anyone have this and used it to in an avy...
Anyone have this and used it to in an avy situation? I am intrigued by the hoe function for quicker snow evacuation.. but an worried about the ergonomics and setup time. Thanks
The hoe setup is as fast as any other shovel, save for maybe the BD Deploy series because it's button-pull.
The shovel takes more time to setup. you have to release the intermediate handle, slide it up, insert the end, lock the end lock the intermediate handle. So the steps are button, pull, button, button. Penalty is only a second or two if you're proficient. IF you haven't used the shovel since it came in the mail, you're going to have problems.
I don't think I'd want to dig with the hoe anyway. It doesn't seem to work as efficiently as a shovel. The hoe serves a different purpose. More for assessment and structure building.
