    just right

This is a legit shovel with a nice big blade that still fits in your bag with ease. I hate it when my partners have small little shovel blades that cant move snow quickly, or a plastic blade that fails to cut through hard snow with ease. This shovel, however moves snow quickly and has a burley blade but it isn't heavy or bulky. I use the shovel to build big old booters but its also a safety tool, and I love it.

      Strong, durable, compact.

I've had some good luck with this shovel. Blade and shaft are very sturdy and strong. Top plastic part of handle could possibly crack, but hasn't on mine in over a couple years. Folfd up and stores nicely in your pack. Also good for building booters or even digging out your car/truck.

      ok shovel

      • Familiarity:I've used it several times

This shovel is pretty good. I got it cause I like the nice big blade and the extendable handle. I end up using my shovel alot to build jumps and stuff and it sucks to have tiny little blade with a short handle. I have a couple gripes with the shovel tho, the handle doesnt extend as long as I thought it would, and the blade doesnt feel super strong. I would think twice before trying to chop ice with it, whereas my old black diamond deploy shovel was burly and I would smash it into anything, but it had a shorter handle and a smaller blade and I lost it. overall I like this b2 but I wish it was a bit burlier, with a longer handle.

      B2 is Bomber

      • Familiarity:I've used it several times

This shovel stays with my pack so I can easily grab it on a big snow day accessed from the resorts. However, that pack does stay in the back of my truck when not in use, and this shovel has dug out myself, friends, and plenty of mountain tourists out of the ditch as well as early morning truck evacuations from the previous nights snow fall. Not the lightest, but Ill gladly trade that for a larger blade to move more snow.

Burly shovel, but a bit flawed

      • Familiarity:I've used it several times

Maybe I just got a bad batch, but the end cap was missing after a few days, the shaft filled with snow, and their is some seamless missing. A burly shovel, but I've been turning to my Voile Telepro instead of this newer and easier-cutting blade. Once some issues are fixed it will be a nice shovel for big guys moving plenty of snow.

Great for rescue, less so for pit walls

      • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

Durable, simple, well-designed...but take away those stupid ribs.

      Pluses:

      + Nice size and shape

+ Great handle (bright, good angle)

+ Flat-ish shovel blade makes it easier to have flat pit walls

      Deltas:

      - Even with the new end-caps, the extendable handle still freezes up way more than my old BD shovel

      - The strengthening "ribs" on the blade make it look tough, but they make unsightly marks on my pit walls -- using this shovel makes it significantly more difficult to achieve my anal-retentive-standard smooth pit walls for layer ID.

      Bombproof

      • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

Yea it is a shovel and yea they all do the same thing. Or do they? I have used many a shovel and I really like this one. It is not the lightest shovel out there but it can dig with a shovel twice its weight and size. I snowmobile a lot and therefore get stuck a lot which means a lot of shoveling. This thing moves the heavy crap, cuts great pits and stash's in a nice small package.

Is this shovel compatible with storing any...

Is this shovel compatible with storing any of the BCA probes in its handle?

      Best Answer

BCA has actually discontinued the practice of putting the probe in its shovel. After speaking with the rep the company believes that those two tools should be two separate entities to ensure efficiency during a rescue situation. They do make one with a saw in its handle, http://www.backcountry.com/backcountry-access-arsenal-shovel-ext-with-a2-blade-and-28cm-saw.
