You can't beat the Ultimate.

It's not usually ideal to talk about skis by discussing what they aren't, but it makes sense in the case of the Atomic Ultimate 85 Ski. It's plenty of things—a wood core, a rockered tip, half-cap construction—but what it isn't is heavy, and that makes all the difference.

With an 85mm waist, the Ultimate 85 is the biggest board in Atomic's touring lineup, and you'd be forgiven for thinking it was packing a little bit of a beer belly, but it isn't. At just over 4.5lb per pair, it can hold its own with all the other lightweight tourers out there, but you don't have to sacrifice float to enjoy a killer uphill performance. By building the core from ultralight poplar and caruba wood, Atomic was able to keep the foundation of the ski nice and light, and then it laid down full-length carbon inserts that keep the stiffness up in the "rippable" range, so you can enjoy your way down as well as up.

As the width suggests, Atomic focused on making the Ultimate 85 highly versatile. To that end, it built the ski with an All-Mountain Rocker, which combines 15% tip rocker with full-length camber underfoot, so you'll be able to plane up over soft snow and lay down a killer edge when you spend the day slicing through hardpack or carving up corn. The Ultimate resists sketchy torsional twisting, too, with a Step Down Sidewall 2.0 construction that places sidewalls underfoot to direct power to the edges and uses a lightweight cap construction towards the tip and tails to trim ounces and give the ski a smooth, easily turnable feel. The flat tails let you finish turns with authority (and keep your skins firmly attached), and the sintered bases help you reach face-melting speeds when you finally find those perfect once-a-season conditions.
