Description

Rip through the peaceful, pristine wild.

Superlight and agile, the Atomic Charter Ski climbs like lightning, and the girthy 100mm waist and rockered tip floats like a dirigible. With traditional camber and titanium-reinforced step-down sidewall, it bites into hardpack for precision slicing on otherwise slide-for-life terrain. Like a wily and graceful beast, this aptly versatile ski will lead you up and down through variable backcountry day after glorious, unspoiled day.

  • Powder Profile combines rockered tip and traditional camber underfoot for float, easy turn-entry, and supreme edgehold
  • Lite wood core reduces overall weight for maximum maneuverability and lively response
  • Step down sidewall construction features side reinforcement that resists damage and titanium Mega Grip for exceptional edge and torsional rigidity
  • Weighs a mere 7lb 8 oz per pair (176cm)
  • Mid-radius sidecut makes quick, tight turns and provides high-speed stability when arcing long and wide
  • Works with custom, prefit Charter Pro skins (sold separately)

I took these for a couple of springtime tours in the San Juans and was really pleased. The early rise tip made it as easy turner and more importantly gave it some good float. (I also ski these 10cm shorter than all-round alpine skis with the view that the weight savings was worth it.) We skied breakable crust -- and these were burly enough, though clearly then don't plow through like a ski with some metal would -- we skied 6 inches of mid-winter quality powder -- and there was plenty of float -- we skied lots of sunny aspects with chunky-monkey spring chop -- and they were easy to unweight and swing. (No in bounds yet on these, so can't comment on groomers/bumps.)

Usually ski 185-190 cm for an all-rounder, 155 lbs + 15 lb pack, skied these 176 and was pleased.

Nice touring ski

I demoed these with NTN bindings today (my first time on NTN). I only got two runs in because the boots I was demoing were too small and my toes were killing me...anyways, I am a small person (5'5", 130 #), advanced tele skier. I demoed the 176 because that's all they had for me to try. I was a bit wary because normally I ski a 156 Volkl Aura (alpine). The longest tele ski I'd ever skiied was a 165 (Kiku & I loved it).

Anyway I had a blast and now I have a huge Charter crush... They ski like a much shorter ski. Easy to turn in the bumps because they have a TON of rocker. I didn't find them too hard to flex. I'm seriously considering picking up a pair now -- I would never have considered going longer like that before today.

The ski itself was certainly not the ski for me. Although it is touted as one of Atomic?s touring offerings, the rep kept telling me that the ski had been stiffened and that was the gist of what he kept repeating to me. Sure enough they were super stiff which did not go over very well for me when I found myself in some bumps making my way back to the tents. The skis were heavier than I would have wanted and were hard to bring around in that terrain. They did ok on fresh groomed runs but at 186 and as stiff as they were that was not a big surprise. I would recommend this ski to someone who wants a really stiff backcountry ski and won?t be in tight spaces all that often. It could also be better for heavier skiers or more powerful people than myself.

5'10 165lb. The skis I currently have are the Salomon Rocker 2 115 in a 188cm (powder and all arounder), a Volkl Mantra in a 177cm (mostly harder conditions), and the Dynafit Stoke ina a 173cm (touring ski, very nimble and light, albeit a bit soft).
