Big Daddy Ski

Do a couple of steep ‘n deep runs on the Atomic Big Daddy Ski and you might decide to pick your prom date up on these super fat powder beasts instead of borrowing your dad’s Caddy. Atomic built these boats to be stiffer than the average powder ski so you can hit the sketchy steeps harder than an A-bomb hits the Nevada desert. This ski only comes in one size—huge, so don’t climb into the driver’s seat unless you’re ready to step on the gas. A Dura Edge gives you the bite you need to cruise the grooms when the powder’s been packed into the ground.

Bottom Line: Wear your seatbelt.

Talk shop with all the gear freaks out there: ask 'em questions, upload/browse photos, and give your 2¢.

Upset comments over product description text

By: Backcountry.com Employee

Hello all - I manage the copywriters here at backcountry.com, and I was just came across some of the angry reactions to the writer's copy on this product page.

I have four comments.

1. As a rule, yes, we do try to entertain, however we also routinely steer clear of politically based comments. In that regard, this description should never have reached the page. And I am sorry that it offended some.

2. Over the years, I've been amazed at the level of venomous and nearly hateful energy and comments that people increasingly feel easy about making under the comfortable, covert mantle of cyberspace or e-mail. We do not censor any reviews except those that contain hate speech (one on this page was close, but, as they say, "no cigar"). Neither do we hide any of our data from the community.

3. The text does not express the opinion of backcountry or Atomic, so those of you who jumped to that energetic conclusion, please cool it for your own sakes. The text was the product of one highly creative and often over-zealous writer. Take it easy, folks.

4. Transparency is one of our core principles at backcountry.com, and in the interest of transparency, I am preserving the original text created for this product, because after today, Feb 24th, 2009, you will no longer see any reference to the Bush family on this page.

Here's the original text:

I have allways said that skiing and smoking some nice green nugs go hand in hand. Like coffee and hashish in an Amsterdam cafe. Clearly the issue here is that not all people understand this. If they did then everyone would be well, mellow. As for the Atomic Big Daddy, yes I did demo them. They ripped. But then I was stoned. Everything rips when your stoned. This leads me to my final thought. My dad allways said, "it's a poor craftsman that blames his tools."

Wow. Based on the reader responses to this inocuous (but not particularly funny) web sales pitch, I don't know how skiers get their happy, easy-going reputation. There is clearly a darker, angrier side. Too many days standing in weekend lift lines?

I think it's because conservative right-wing skiers, tend to stick with old school brands like Atomic. Progressive, liberal minded skiers who are generally younger tend to buy from fresh brands like 4frnt, Armada, Lib Tech, Surface, Black Diamond and other small ski makers. So I say go ahead and bash Bush and the rest of the conservative right, just do it on a more appropriate product description that appeals to the youthful, eccentric, "over-zealous" crowd.
Keep that creativity flowing, and recognize that this is just a mild jab at the aging republican skier, as well as at the naive and energetic new-school era. I may be feeding a stereotype, but it's strictly observational humor.

Having mounted and skied on similar stiff skis with a tele set-up, (Bluehouse Shoots, Volkl Explosives, Atomic Powder Plus, BD Zealot) I'd recommend mounting them forward. I hope you're using a stiff binding like Hammerheads, Bishops, or NTN's, and a stiff boot, because otherwise, a stiff board like this is going to feel out of control. With the bigger skis, I like to find the narrowest part of the ski, and match it with the widest part of the boot. This is usually between -2cm and -4cm from chord center (exact middle of running length of ski.) Err on the tail side. You can go forward if you don't like them as far back, but I'd probably go with a more forward mount- maybe 3pin line (on boot) matched to 4cm forward of ski chord center.

2009 Big Daddy

By:

Skied these today at Shames.120cm in the last week, then got high winds and Artic freeze. It is wind blown/ cut up crap. Very happy with the performance on the bump runs. It's rockered tip helps flow over almost everything, It is a little light (BETA) so it cannot mash through everything. I had the first gen of these with a touring binding and I think these will be better. Groomed slopes are not a high point unless you like big turns on hard snow or skidding your skis. These skis are made for soft snow and that is where they shine. If your looking for a ski with a rocker tip and a stiff tail, there not much out there, this could be the one for you.

So, I have more Days on the skis and I give the ski 4.5/5.I weigh 195lbs, 6'2". This ski has a 125mm waist and it skis better than my old 107mm Big daddy everywhere, except hardpacked and they sucked on hard pack also. The 4.5 is because I have never had or found the perfect ski, yet, I demo as much as possible.

With the absolute most stupid comment about a Bush bombing an oil producing nation. Is that your feeble attempt at humor??? Here is a little piece of advice....SHUT UP!!! Not one single attempt at another attack against us after 9-11. ALL DO TO HIS POLICIES ENACTED!!!! I will NEVER buy an Atomic ski because of that stupid, brain dead statement. IDIOTS!!!!!

Fred,

I too was deeply offended by the writer's original description. To wit,

1. Is "harder" really an appropriate more...
