Atlas made the Women’s E10 Series Elektra Snowshoe to make your winter hiking experience easy, comfortable, and more fun than you thought possible. Unlike those clunky tennis-racket looking things, these Atlas snowshoes feature a V Frame design that makes your strides totally natural. You also get steel crampons to help you on steep terrain and plush, ergonomically designed bindings that eliminate all pressure points.

Bottom Line: Who said snowshoeing has to feel hard?

What's the best type of shoe/boot to wear with these? I'll be using them for relatively short (under 2 miles) & fairly leisurely walks on open fields and some rolling hills.

If the path is fairly packed you can do fine with a good waterproof hiking boot. If you'll be trudging through deep snow and getting fairly wet, then I like the rubberized/waterproof Columbia boots.

Atlas are excellent snowshoes

I use Atlas 11 Mountain snowshoes which I bought after watching my girlfriend thoroughly enjoy her Atlas Elektra 23's, either walking through deep powder or running like a gazelle in fresh, shallow snow. She didn't kick up appreciable snow on her back under any conditions, so have to wonder if it is a matter of technique. I also have Redfeather Sport 30's and have used Tubb's and Army mountain snowshoes back in my Alaskan Army days and find the Atlas bindings and design to be the best out there. Just my opinion.

I think the bindings I have on an Atlas SS are the same as in this picture--I got a bad blister from a trip--any ideas on how to prevent this from happening??

I just bought these and thought I was going to love them. am 5'6", 140 pounds with my boots and gear. I did not love the wrap binding, it didn't seem to wrap far enough around my boot and it did loosen up midway up the trail. This trip was mostly hardpacked snow, some powder. I did love the narrowness of the show so I wasn't stepping on my tails anymore. BUT, I didn't love how they threw snow all over my back-even on hard packed snow. Its a good thing I wasn't back country and could get back home to change clothes. I was soaked and freezing. I'll be taking them back ASAP.

I am seeking women's showshoes for the first time, and really do not want the kind of shoes that "throw snow on your back". What are good recommendations for comfort and performance for a beginning wanting to be out a few miles at a time?

Marina,
I do like the Atlas shoes, the bands are setup to minimize "snow fling" but it still happens. Personally, I am a huge fan of hinged bindings and love my Tubb's. Take a look at the Tubb's women's series listed here from least to most aggresive:

I personally own the Couloirs and love them. A more aggressive shoe lets you leave that boring packed trail behind, but generally costs a little more. Check out some of the youtube videos found under the search heading "orssnowshoesdirect", they do an awesome job of explaining the difference between brands and styles of shoes. Good luck!

Throws snow

These are very comfortable & easy to get in & out of but they throw snow everywhere! I've talked to several people and they have heard similar stories about Elecktra...I'm going to give Tubb's a try as I hear they do not throw as much snow due to their design.

I was wondering if it hurts to use these snowshoes in extremely iced conditions. An example would be this year we've been having mild and cold weather on and off and this causes the trails to begin to melt and then re-freeze causing there to be uneven ice formation.

Hi Dianna,

That's not something that I've ever noticed while snowshoeing. The main things that I find different in icy conditions is that snowshoeing is louder than in powder, and that each step has to be more carefully placed on a slope so that I don't inadvertently slide...I think about where my crampons are and where my weight needs to be to make them work properly. I guess since the ground is harder when icy there's more impact when you step, so if that's an issue for you, then maybe you might get pain somewhere (I'm thinking of the difference between walking on grass vs. pavement, for example). In general though...nope, I don't think so.

Hope that helps!
Andrea
