E9 Series Elektra Snowshoe - Women's

Atlas made the Women's E9 Series Elektra Snowshoes with a women's-specific design. This means you get strong, durable snowshoes that won't make your stride feel heavy or awkward. The Elektra’s aluminum, V-shaped frame works with the Spring-Loaded Suspension to facilitate natural foot articulation, so you get comfort and control with each step. Atlas designed the Wrapp bindings with separate molding for your right and left foot so your feet stay comfy, and a one-piece web loop gives you a secure fit with one easy pull. The durable deck material remains flexible even when it's colder than nardz outside.

Bottom Line: The Elektra supports a natural stride.

Terrible Snowshoe

By:
November 26, 2008

This snowshoe in essence, is a good design but terrible in execution. The binding works well, keeps your foot in, but the rubber band suspension flicks so much snow up your butt you are likely to end up with a freezing lower section. Trust me, it is not the way I walk either as it simply always flicks snow up and at you no matter who it is. I really want to get a new pair and I just got these last year!

Confused about concern about getting wet

By:
July 15, 2009

I'm not understanding why one would care about getting snow flipped up on them. Are you not wearing waterproof pants and jacket while you're snowshoeing? I have the men's 12 series version and I think the ability to walk backwards and not hearing the shoe drag on the ice far outweights the issue with having snow flipped up. I do wear Gortex pants and jacket though. Love mine.

I both agree and disagree with you.

Agreed, the suspension system certainly has advantages. Agreed, getting snow on your butt isn't a huge problem when wearing something completely waterproof.

However, when you read technical information about the great binding system that fails to mention that side effect, it can be a bit of a surprise the first time you go out on them. Many, many people ski/snowshoes/hike in gear that is water resistant rather than completely waterproof, especially if they're not going deep into the backcountry prepared for every emergency, and that can lead to some wet clothing. Some people just don't like the feeling of a snowshoe-load of snow hitting them on every step...especially short people who find that the snow ends up down their neck sometimes.

It's a matter of personal preference. Does snow flipping up make these snowshoes useless or terrible? No. Can it lead to an unpleasant surprise? Absolutely.

I also do not understand the problem with snow flipping up. I've owned and used Atlas snowshoes for 4 years and LOVE them, especially the bindings - very easy on, very secure, and very easy off. I have never suffered hypothermia or even gotten wet using these. I think they're great.

not so bad

By:

I have had atlas snow shoes for a couple years and just read the poor reviews...It is true that snow is kicked up, but I found it to be only a minor issue. I dress appropriately for winter conditions in snow clothes and have never had a problem with being wet or cold at the end of my hikes.
The shoe is lightweight, easy to get on and off, holds your foot in well, and is great at keeping you atop the snow. They perform well on both up and down slopes.
I am happy with my shoes and bought them for my sister, her husband and my dad this past christmas.

Great shoe --Better price

By:
May 8, 2009

I have been on these shoes for two years. I average 2-3 miles a day, 5 days a week (when there is snow. I have a black lab and he loves to romp in the snow). These shoes are very easy to put on. They are not too long and are great in dense woods or in open fields with deep snow. I have not had a backpack on when I use them. I think for longer overnight hikes, a longer pair would be more suitable. This price is really good!!

Elektra Snowshoe

Previous reviewer is correct, snow covers your backside. The Atlas FAQ's on their website allude to this problem and say it may go away after breaking in. We didn't wait and returned them, ruined our day outside. Wished we had read the reviews first here at BackCountry.

hypothermic hazard; poor design

By:
February 17, 2009

No! Don’t buy Atlas. Your backside will get frozen and it’s not only annoying, it’s dangerous. At first I thought it was the way I walked - how the shoes threw so much snow up my backside; I tried walking different ways and still my legs, butt and back were pelted with snow all the same. So I went looking for answers and was shocked to find Atlas’ website claims it is part of their “unique design,” and that flipping snow up may stop when they are “broken in.” This is my second season in these shoes and they are still throwing snow. So, how is this dangerous? Because your body heat melts the snow and your clothes become wet and frigid – think hypothermia if you stop moving!

You should be wearing waterproof clothes or GTX if you're going in the snow! Then they wouldn't become wet and "dangerous".
