    Take to the seas.

Ditch the floating cesspool of cruise ships and take a sea kayak tour around the tip of Argentina for an up-close and personal view of seals, penguins, and other incredible wildlife that can't be seen anywhere else. With the Astral Buoyancy Sea Wolf Personal Flotation Device fastened firmly around your chest, you'll comfortably paddle through the Golfo Nuevo to reach the Valdes Peninsula. Designed with sea kayakers in mind, the Sea Wolf is lightweight and quick-drying, and it displays an impressively economical use of space.

Certified by the USCG, the Sea Wolf blends Gaia and PE foam to give long-distance paddlers comfort and confidence until shore is a sure thing. The Foam Tectonic platform puts the flotation into plates, like the tech namesake, to keep the PFD profile fairly low. The vest itself is made from burly 400D ripstop nylon and lined with a moisture-managing, though tough, 200D nylon mesh. While seal tusks outmatch the Sea Wolf, errand oars or rough rocks shouldn't leave your PFD worse for the wear. Polypro webbing makes it simple to tweak the fit to match your layering for changing weather.

The front clamshell pocket has a hard foam front and unzips to give you a portable tray, in case you need a dry place to rest your snacks. A fleece-lined handwarmer hides behind this pocket so you can warm your water-chilled paws when you paddle into a protected bay. Two side mesh pockets sit just a little bit above your hips. These mesh pouches are perfect for carabiners, lip balm, or an emergency energy bar. Your hiking hydration bladder fits in the back of the Sea Wolf with the tube snaking over your shoulder for easy access to liquid.

    Great PFD

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The Astral Sea Wolf personal floatation device is a gem! The floatation plates, primarily in the front and around the mid-torso provide a snug, but ultra comforatble fit. Also, the flotation concentration on the mid/lower torso and elongated shoulder straps keep the plates away from the face (or faceguard) during that all essential tuck. And the pockets....the pockets are amazing! Enough room to fit all the neccesities for a z-drag (minus a rope), light first-aid equipment and other goodies! Unless you are in need of a rescue vest, the Astral Sea Wolf is the way to go!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

My boyfriend is a raft guide, and he decided to purchase the Sea Wolf after much anguish and research. He loves it. He is 5'7" and weighs about 140 lbs. The size S/M fits him very well and could fit even a much larger person. The front pocket is ideal for holding items like sun screen, carabiners, cell phones (if you want to), prussic cords- you name it. The only things about this PFD that is not ideal is the location for mounting your knife. However the shoulder strap or waist strap can be adapted pretty easily.

    Way comfortable! Hard to buckle

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I really like the fit of this PFD! The techtonic foam plates on the front are genius - way more comfortable on the chest than any other ladies PFD I tried. Seriously, more models should be made with this construction!! Oh, and the fleece hand warmer is *delightful*. I like just about everything in this thing... Except:

    - The big issue I have that makes it 4 stars not 5: It is hard to get buckled!! At least for me, and I do have shorter arms. If you have gumby arms or go go gadget arms you might be fine. But for us shorties, it's a real challenge. The problem is that the long piece of the strap is on the front and the short piece is on the back, meaning you have to reach across your body with your left arm allllllll the way across the bulk of the front panel, stretch it around to your right side to reach the back panel in order to click the buckle (and you have to do it two handed). Why did they not design it the other way? Put the short buckle end on the front and the long piece on the back panel so you can use your right arm to bring the strap forward and click it into place (you could even do that 1 handed!) If this design issue was fixed, this would be a real winner.
    - I do also feel like the pockets on sides are hard to access because you have to twist your arm backwards to use them which is uncomfortable. If you use them for things less frequently needed it is probably fine. The large front pocket would make more sense if you needed something more often.

Incredibly comfortable PFD. Highly recommend this product. I had to return only because I needed a dedicated pocket for marine radio. Aside from now having that feature in a Kokatat PFD... I really miss this PFD and would go back to it in a heartbeat. Just wish it had a spot for my radio...

    Happy Paddler.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I wear a Kokatat Ronin Pro as my white water vest, I have had it for about 4 years and I love it. However, it was the only PFD I owned. I didnt want to wear it out when I was Flat-water touring, sea kayaking or playboating. So as I do more playing then anything else I was looking at something like a NRS Ninja. I saw a Astral Sea Wolf on sale in a local store, I went in, tried it on and loved it. The clamshell pocket has heaps of room with out getting in the way. The hand warmer is a nice touch, the pockets in the side are really good as well. This is now my go to PFD for everything unless I need to be wearing a rescue vest. I didn't think I would find something more comfortable than my Ronin Pro but I have. When my Ronin needs replacing I will be seriously looking at the greenvest now.

Bottom line, if you need a PFD for just about any type of paddling, buy this PFD! Unless you need a rescue PFD.

    Unanswered Question

My chest is 38" when I inhale and 37" when I exhale, is a M/L going to be too big? I don't want it to be too loose if I'm not wearing a wetsuit or paddling jacket. (or is it going to be too tight when I am wearing a wetsuit or paddling jacket).
