Earth-friendly solution for water immersions.

The Astral Buoyancy Abba Personal Flotation Device features a shorter torso and sculpted chest, so it fits you better than any man's vest could. The organically grown and sustainably harvested Kapok used for flotation in the front also conforms to your body like no other material, so you're just as comfortable as you are buoyant.

  • Neoprene shoulder straps stay in place and won’t rub you raw, and feature reflective trim for extra safety
  • Low-profile polyethylene foam in the back of the PFD is recyclable and gives you a cushion of protection
  • Waistband with side-release buckle and adjustable side straps dial in the fit to perfection
  • Fleece-lined hand warmer pockets give you a spot to restore circulation to your chilled fingers
  • Front lash tab provides an attachment point for your knife or a VHF radio
  • Front zip pocket provides secure storage

Really wanted to like this PFD

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

The kapok feels really good... it feels like it would "learn" my shape, unlike standard foam. The boob cutouts are pretty shallow. Probably ideal for A/B cup size, for C/D (me) it's better than a man's PFD, but not as cutout as I was hoping for.

I am 36D, with largest chest measurement of 38.5". I tried both the S/M and M/L. I found the M/L too big. I had to max all the straps on the S/M but preferred the fit and assume that the filling may compress over time.

The handwarmer pockets zip and extend up the chest to the shoulder strap, so tons of space, plus two more zip pockets.
The reasons I'm returning it are 1) the shoulders are not padded... the buckle rides right on top of my shoulder and carrying my kayak will be torture (and I'm not convinced about the "no rub neoprene vs. padding). And 2) the back of my arms hit the back padding and waist buckles when I move my arms backwards.

Wife loves it..

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift, but have feedback to share

My Wife loves her PFD. She wears it for all things on water- from fishing to paddling, to just riding around in the boat. It fits her small frame well, with long lasting comfort- great through an 8 day 180 mile paddle. Loves the fleece lined pockets, the knife tab is well placed, and she loves the color. Good work Astral.

Good for small water

I do like the fit but in big water the zippered front tends to open up. There is no inside clips and so that is a real safety issue for me.

Responded on

I'm having the same issue with my jacket, so I contacted Astral and they're giving me an exchange for a new one for free. :)

Great jacket for small paddlers!

  • Gender: Female
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I love this jacket! First and foremost, I am a small paddler and most PFDs only tighten down to 30" at the chest, which is not quite small enough for me. I have a 28" chest. This jacket cinches down plenty tight and can cinch down even tighter than I need. The Kapok is way more comfortable than foam that is in most jackets for flotation because it conforms to your shape and it floats just as well and doesn't break down over time. I also love this jacket because it has 3 big pockets (the ones for your hands are fleece lined!) The only down side is, I sometimes hit my arm on the knife because the attachment is in a slightly awkward spot. This jacket also fades fast and to a not so pretty color. All in all, I love this PFD and would definitely buy it again. Astral never disappoints!
