These Boots Were Made For Hiking...

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: 7

... And that's just what they'll do! After my other hiking shoes kicked the bucket mid-multi-day-backpacking-trip, the hunt for a comfortable, durable, supportive, and stylish hiking shoe began.

I tried on at least a dozen pairs, but none fulfilled all of my qualifications... Until I slipped on an Asolo Tacoma GV. Ah, my very own Cinderella moment.

A size 8 was suggested to me, but I felt like I was moving around in 'em, so I opted for a 7 (usually a 7.5). I think sizing down made the break in period a bit tougher than it had to be. I suffered some heel blisters on steeper and longer hikes (hence the four stars), but now they are perfectly molded to my foot. The precise fit of these boots offers a feeling of control, something you don't get with those heavy clunker boots. I have worn these in the Pacific Northwest's rainy season and loved to brag about my warm, dry feet to my hiking buddies. The ankle support is A+ for backpacking and the Vibram sole offers superb traction on a variety of terrain.

Plus, I think it's worth mentioning these are pretty darn cute to boot (hah!) and we all know how hard it is to find attractive hiking shoes. I have the Earth color, which is a versatile shade of grey. I thought this color would get dirty fast, but the suede repels dirt well and they are easy to freshen up with suede cleaner. ProTip: They look get with some scrunched chunky Woolrich socks.

These Boots Were Made For Hiking...

    Sturdy light weight hiker

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: 8.5

After trying on several boots with mixed results I finally got these on. First off they run large, st least on me. I have low volume, narrow feet and one is 1/2 size smaller. Typically have to get a 1/2 size larger but in this boot I went down a 1/2 size. The boot is cut long so I didn't get any toe jam either which also be a problem. The insole that comes with it is worthless so anticipate getting some super feet. I haven't done any real hiking yet but just walking around they seem to be pretty good with no hotspots so far. I'll report back after a day hike later.
Another thing which I really like which has nothing to do with fit or performance is that they have absolutely no pink on them anywhere. 😊 Every other boot I tried on had some range of the color pink on it. Please, I don't need to wear pink hiking boots to let everyone know I'm a girl. Let's get over the pink crap on women's outdoor gear please.

    Finally!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

I have been looking for a new pair of hiking/backpacking boots for about 5 months. I have tried on approx 30 different types/styles to the point where I thought I had become the "Princess" in the Princess and the Pea. Nothing was good enough! But these are perfect. Here are the highlights: I have fairly narrow feet and I did not feel that I was slopping around in these. They are nice and light and don't give you that waffle stomper feel of most backpacking boots. I could scramble in them without feeling like I had cement shoes. There were no spots that dug into my foot - like at the ankle or the top of my foot. Felt great with the first hike - no need to break in for 30 miles before they are comfortable! Traction is great and works really well over rocky trails. Ankle support is great.

As a caveat, these are my first real hiking boots, but so far I am in love. The first time I wore these was on a 10 mile hike (to 5000 ft. at the peak), which involved some scrambling over boulders and crossing streams - I was surprised and pleased to find that I didn't have a single blister, and my ankles (which usually ache after long walks or a run) had been completely protected and felt great. I've used them several times since, and even find myself making excuses to wear them to the office because I enjoy them so much. I got these shoes based on the great things I've heard about the brand, and so far I have not been disappointed.

    Things I like:

    - The vibram rubber is very sticky and very sturdy. I even got my feet too close to a fire without realizing it, and while they were too hot to even touch, the rubber was unaffected (whew).

    - There are fewer seams on this than most of the hiking boots I tried. I think these will last longer because of this, as there are fewer places for them to come apart. Even then, these are the most sturdily-made shoes I've ever owned.

    - They are very light compared to the other boots I tried. It really seems to make a difference on long hikes - I was able to do some trail running in these after 8 miles of hiking in them.

    - Easy on and off. For hiking boots, these seem really easy to slip on and off, especially with the connected tongue.
