Awesome pants

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I ski at Mount Baker where the snow is deep and sometimes wet. Top of the chair may have a foot of fresh and the bottom may be in the rain. Not an issue with these. Dry as a bone at the end of the day.

Great lightweight bibs

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I received a pair of these bibs a few seasons ago as part of a GORE-TEX product testing program. Since then, I've put them through the ringer, primarily skiing but also using them for occasional rainy day hikes and even a few cold-weather river trips.
Overall, I've been pleased with these pants. I like the bibs for skiing, and the built-in waist band makes it easy to drop the bib part down if I'm skinning or don't need them (I usually drop the bibs when I'm hiking).
Durability has been good, although I did develop a few small tears in the knees (probably from kneepads and telemarking). The bottom cuff reinforcements have kept ski edges from damaging the material at all. No other signs of wear and tear after 3ish years of regular use.
These pants offer great storm protection - I've stayed dry in water and wind, even when friends up getting soaked. All the zippers seal well and the bibs offer a bit of extra protection from water dripping down your back. Even the coldest, gustiest winds don't stand a chance.
The weight (or lack thereof) and lack of insulation makes these great for touring, although there are some extra cold days at the resort that I wouldn't mind a thicker/warmer shell. It's not really an issue as long as I plan ahead and layer well.
These are definitely a pair of swishy pants, and people will hear you coming.
I don't love the two pockets - they're a little small for anything large than keys, a phone and maybe a snack bar, and they can be difficult to get at when you have a jacket and pack on.
Fit is slimmer, like much of Arcteryx's line. Great for skiing, skinning and other activities that require a lot of moving around.
All in all, great pants. Like all of Arcteryx gear, you'll pay more but you'll get more.

Great Ice and Mixed Pants

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Because these pants have a slim cut, they are not combersome and make great ice and mixed climbing apparel. They are always waterproof, windproof, and have been fully abrasion resistant for a few years of heavy use. This is the best made pair of winter shell pants I have ever had or seen!

Awesome

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These are the last hard shell bibs you'll ever need. I have a size medium (normally wear a 32x32 pant) and they fit perfectly down to the bend in my boot and have enough room for 2 layers underneath. I did rip a hole in them with my crampons... but that was more my fault than the pants'!

Get them!

The perfect backcountry pants

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have owned these bibs for over two seasons and have been very impressed, for two reasons: These bibs are incredibly durable and they work in a variety of temperatures. I give these bibs the highest rating. The bibs took some time to get used to, but after a few tumbles in some of the "deep stuff" you are excited to have the extra protection. I also find that it keeps me warmer, as it prevents in air flow from creeping in at the waist line.

Everything I was looking for

These bibs are expensive, however personally, they are worth every cent. When I first got these, I planned on using them for mainly snowboarding and winter hiking. For both of those activities, they have performed incredibly. They are perfectly waterproof and extremely warm when combined with layers. Above all though for me is the durability. I've had these bibs for three years now and they look brand new. I've put these things through some miles and hits and they barely show it. So, for me, it's worth the money to have multi use waterproof pants that last for years.

Now, the downside. For me, I haven't liked the suspenders on these particular bibs very much. It's not a deal breaker, but I didn't find them that comfortable. So, most of the time, I simply use the built in belt and fold the suspenders down. Besides that, I couldn't love or use these more!

Love them!

I've been using these pants for about 3 years maybe more... i've lost track. they are the end all of weather protection. When you want to go for a hike and the weather is nasty. that's when the fun really starts. The Pro-Shell just takes what ever you throw at it. from hiking in a downpour to an amazing fresh white out. these are great. They don't have a strap for the gaiters which is true, however they do have a clip on the front to catch your boot laces and a rivet on each side so you can make your own out of some thin nylon string. The almost full length zipper down the leg is great for regulating your temperature on the hotter days. Other than that. these have been helping to keep warm and dry for years and they show no sign of letting my down any time soon. This material is top shelf. Enjoy!

Almost Perfect

After using these for a while in a variety of activities I can give them a solid 5 stars for their waterproofness and breathability. I have been extremely happy with their durability and how they have held up to the abuse I have put them through.
Some of the things I would like to have had now after having these around other folks with slightly different products are either a trap door bottom or zipps that actually run through the hip to undo at the top. Some way that would allow one to drop a load comfortably in a storm or even potentially while still on a rope team. I also had the internal gaiters partially rip out. those two things aside. The fit is perfect, the little stash pockets are wonderful, The belt is great for when you want to drop the suspenders. I would definitely recommend these bibs if you want to stay dry. Full disclosure, I participate in the GoreTex MountainTechs project where I periodically receive gear to test in exchange for participation.

These are the bibs you're looking for!

These waterproof/breathable pants are phenomenal. From the local sledding hill to high altitude peaks these bibs have kept me both warm and dry. The full length side zippers offer easy access to my pockets and provide great ventilation for when you get moving. The high back and suspenders keep body heat in and keep snow/moisture out. The small front chest pockets are great for the small essentials that are always good to have on hand. The reinforced knees and seat have withstood sliding and stress and still look practically new. These bombproof pants promise years of continued service. Full disclosure, I am lucky enough to do some testing and reviewing for Gore-Tex as a MountainTech.

Simply the Best.

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I'd run out of superlatives if I tried to say everything good about these. They are the most durable technical pants I've ever had--I wouldn't hesitate to use them for any winter pursuits. I've biked in them, and the pins on my aggressive platform pedals bounced right off the finish on the pants.

Perfect cut for aggressive skiing, and the built-in inner-liner/gaiter works great (and stays sealed shut) for those deep powder days.

A ton of adjustability in the sizing. I'm 6' tall and 150#, with a 32" waist and a 32-33" inseam. I ordered the medium regular, and they're perfect with ski boots or hiking boots. The waist does have some stretch to it, so don't be afraid to order on the small side of the sizing chart. Leg length is great as well.

Waterproof? To a fault. I've never, NEVER, never had any problems with ventilation, water infiltration, or other moisture concerns.

The bib design is comfortable, and the bib+belt holds them in place during the most aggressive activities.

Expensive? Yes. But this is a "order once and use for a decade" piece of gear. Maybe longer than a decade, if you can keep fitting into them.

They're simply the best bib pants available.

absolutely perfect

I've worn these bibs for the last 3 or 4 years in all types of weather and all sorts of outdoor madness and they are totally bombproof. Great construction- lots of extra material where you need it but still simple enough to pack down small. Water proof zippers reach down the entire length of the leg so that you can adjust according to the weather or humidity. I wear these pants all four seasons and I am pretty rough on them and after 3 years they are still in excellent shape and totally waterproof. Gore Tex material keeps them dry inside and out. Also, these pants are not baggy like so many others. I am lucky in that I get to test products for Gore and occasionally receive new gear from them. These pants are Proshell and therefore the absolute top of the line. Absolutely amazing.

Best of the Best

I've been using these pants for three years now and have nothing but positive words to say. I use them in a variety of sports, activities and conditions, but primarily for mountaineering, and backcountry and resort skiing.

They are incredibly durable and, after three years of use, are still in great shape. All the high-wear areas are reinforced with stronger fabric or extra stitching and this extra quality has made a huge difference.

The different size and inseam options also make for an excellent fit. I have a short inseam and had not previously found shell pants that fit me satisfactorily. These do and it is a pleasure not to have extra fabric hanging down over my boots.

The full length zipper allows me to regulate temperature very effectively and seals out water without any issues.

The only critique I have is that I wish the pants came with a small strap to tie the internal gaiters around the bottom of the boot. This would be a nice addition, as the internal gaiters do have rivet holes for such a strap.

All in all, an absolute 5-star product.

Great for Winter Activities

I have used these for winter mountaineering and backcountry skiing. The fabric is thin but has been really durable when skiing through the trees. I really like the pockets on the bid for storing small items.

The only issue I have with the pants is that the cuffs are really tight around my ski boots. On the bright side, no snow gets in.

I am 5'11" a 180lbs with a 34" waste and a large fits good.

I am 5'5' and weigh about 160lb, would the Arc'teryx theta SV bib medium short be an ideal size for me. Also I am in Oz and finding it impossible to find anything less the L reg sizes, due to this are you able to ship to Oz.

Best Answer Responded on

cam5..., get yourself a "bongo" account or similar. It's what I use for all my Backcountry purchases. Usually free shipping to them, then DHL to you.
Not the cheapest, but for purchases where the manufacturers won't allow international shipping, (Arc'teryx is one) it's the best way to go.
Backcountry + Bongo is my preferred way to buy gear.

Arc'teryx Theta SV bibs

The best bibs I have ever owned! Living in the wet northwest, this is the first time i have sat on a rain soaked charilift and not had a wet butt. The overall design is very good. They are very light weight, but still robust. There is heavier material in the seat and knees and on the inside boot cuffs. The pockets are small, but easily accessible. There are built in gators so the snow doesn't get down your boots. The fly zipper opens from either the bottom or the top, a plus for quick "pit stops". The side zippers go way up the leg so it is easy to cool off by unzipping the upper portion on warm days. These are my go to bibs for wet and powder conditions. Just a note, I belong to the Mountaintechs group and I get to test Gore-tex gear. That doesn't have anything to do with my 5 thumbs up for this product.

5 5

Bombproof

These bibs are simply amazing. They are impenetrable to any moisture and are extremely comfortable, even when you wear them for extended periods of time. They articulate very nicely at all of the joints, and the extended zippers on the legs make them a breeze to get in and out of. As a member of the Gore Mountaintechs community, I have had the opportunity to test numerous pieces of high quality gear. These bibs are definitely one of the premier items that I have been able to test in the field.

Hands Down, The Best Bibs

This is, without doubt, the best pair of bibs I have ever tried. I used to not be a fan of bibs as they seemed to be a bit... constricting. The Theta SV bibs don't ride up like many of the others I've worn in the past, they stretch just enough to stay in place and move with me. I've spent days in them on winter backcountry trips, abused them during SAR exercises and missions, and generally mistreated them for at least 4 years. They're still waterproof, the zippers still work, and they still feel great.

My only gripe is the tiny chest pockets seem to catch condensing water vapor from sweat. DON'T use them as an iPhone pocket unless it's in a plastic bag, even though they seem the perfect fit.

(Full Disclosure: I have been involved in the Gore MountainTechs program since 2007 and have received these bibs for testing as a part of that program.)

Hi
I am 6'3 and weigh in about 225 and am a snowboarder. I am thinking of these bibs for bomb proof Back country and was hesitant on my size and am i am from OZ not likely to be able to try them on.
What are your thoughts on size?

Responded on

There is a sizing chart below the price that should help.

Responded on

I'd say an XL would be good and allow for layers. Not to burst your bubble but these can only be shipped in the US. But they are a great bomber backcountry pant.

sweet shell pants

I have gone through a number of shell pants, few have fit as well as these do, some were lighter but ripped the first time I sat on a granite boulder. I use them for skiing and winter mountaineering. Too warm for summer, but if they weren't black, I'd even try to use them for stormy outings in the warmer seasons. They are tough, but maintain a reasonable weight. The cut is just wide enough to be able to layer underneath without being baggy. I am 6'2" and 200lbs, and wear large regular length and love it. Fits like a custom made pair. My third pair of Arcteryx shell pants and the best one yet.

My height is 179 cm and I weigh about 90 Kg. That usually translates to a 36/32 size pair of jeans. Would the L/Reg be my size then?

Best Answer Responded on

You're almost exactly the same size as me. The L/Reg fit me well. I almost wish I hadn't sold them!
