The Sahara may seem like a great place to visit, what with its drifting mountains of sand, but without the Arc'teryx Spiro Hat and lots of water, you might want to just stay in Cairo. Since this cap features a fold-down neck flap and dries quickly to keep you cool, you can shelter yourself from the intense sun while you comfortably discover yourself amid the lifeless abyss.

Has anyone ever tried this hat under a helmet? I'm looking for a versatile hat for bike touring (and for off the bike stylin' too)

cool hat

  • Fit: Runs small

There was not much guidance on size selection, so I tried M. It was too small for me. Was not sure I wanted to risk a large, since the return shipping is not included. So I liked the idea of the hat, but I'm out $12.94 for the attempt, and was not willing to risk doubling that on another wrong size.

The sun hat I've been searching for...

On high alpine hikes/climbs, I always seem to come back with my neck fried. Let's be honest, when you're enjoying a perfect day out in the wilderness, it's tough to remember to apply sunscreen at regular intervals throughout the day. I've checked out the sombrero style sun hats in the past, and while they offer great sun protection, wearing them also makes me look like my mom out in the garden. This hat is super light, packs down small, and looks/wears like a baseball cap when the flap is stowed. The flap is easily deployed without taking the cap off, but not so easy to roll up with the cap on your head. In my opinion, this is one of the best sun-hats on the market right now.

Versatile, functional

PROs: Versatile for moderate to sunny conditions and changing activities/sun direction.
Looks good - like a baseball cap when the flap is stowed.
The oversized brim doesn't look oversized. It's super packable.
The brim is floppy and can get deformed, but doesn't stay deformed. Just lay it out and it'll go back to it's natural floppiness. I've taken care to avoid creasing the brim, so I'm not sure if it would rebound from a hard crease.

CON: Sizing for medium heads. When the flap is stowed, the size effectively gets smaller. I'm a size medium head (~22.5 in circumf or 7 1/4 diameter) and always fit a size medium helmet in any brand. The size "S/M" is just too snug to be comfortable for long periods when the flap is rolled up and buttoned. I want to try it in the L/XL size, but I'm concerned it might be too loose when the flap is down!

useful info, they need to put hat sizing info in sizing popup...

Here are the hat sizing measurements from Arc'teryx:
S/M: 21.7-22.4in (55-57cm)
L/XL: 22.8-23.6in (58-60cm)
I hope they help!
